To expect to be able to lock the airbnb?

Our family are staying in an airbnb, which is pretty remote but is part of a property with a number of different accommodation options. The one we have is entirely ours to use, and is quite close to the cafe on site, plus some of the activities the place is known for.

So there are probably 20 guests staying on the property in the various houses, camping etc, and people are coming and going all day to visit the Cafe and activities.

We realised on the first day that there are a few external doors, all but one lock from the inside (the push button lock on the handle) but one doesn't even have a lock - it's a sliding door right by the main cafe area. No keys provided at all.

Aibu to think it's normal to expect to be able to secure our accommodation both when we are out of it, and also when we sleep?

We did ask for a key but the owners sort of laughed it off saying they've never had a problem. I'll mention it to them in the review, but should we also let airbnb know that the accommodation isn't secure? I wouldn't have booked it if I knew.

It would probably annoy me a little but wouldn’t make me that anxious. It’s presumably no more insecure than the tents people are camping in at the site, so I can sort of see why the owners might feel it’s not a big deal.

However, I think people that aren’t happy with camping for that very reason might pick the apartment option because they expect to be able to secure it. So I do think it should be clear in the listing and mentioning it in the public review is, to my mind, exactly why public reviews are so valuable on a site like airbnb.

That's the thought process I had. If I was camping, I'd keep valuable things locked up in my car and sleep in the same space as my kids. I wasn't camping, we were in a 2 bed property, so hadn't planned on sharing sleeping space with them (except the baby). We'd paid to sleep in separate rooms in own beds. My dh slept in a little squeaky single bed, instead of the lovely big bed we had in our room, to be safe.

I'll see if they get in touch after the review or reply to it.

Your car would likely not be insured if the keys are not appropriately secured - an unlocked premises is not 'appropriately secured'. Anything held in the car also not insured for the same reason. This is wholly unacceptable to be honest and why I use airbnb as a backup option given it's not generally subject to the same regulations as 'mainstream' hospitality

This seems unlikely. If you keep you car keys in your bag and your bag got taken from, say, a restaurant table they would be less well secured than being in your bag in your unlocked holiday apartment, but you’d still be covered for theft.

No it was just next to the property, slightly hidden under lots of bushes and with reeds. I didn't notice it at first, so a kid could wander in very easily.

Definitely add this information to your review! This (and the unlockable door) are things other renters would want to know BEFORE renting.

This gets worse and worse!!
These are the sort of people who should never rent out property. Flagrant disregard for the safety of their paying customers.

I wouldn't mind- I find that these days everyone is more worked up than I am about health and safety, so if the owner is unconcerned, it is probably extremely safe. I like leaving things unlocked though- makes me feel like the world is a friendly place...

A lovely feeling that will last precisely until the moment someone walks in and steals all your stuff.

Not really- I decided long ago that losing things once or twice in my life was worth it, if I get to feel unworried about it all for my whole life. I wouldn't leave something irreplaceable unlocked, like my violin... but not worrying about a phone/laptop/wallet in a situation like this is worth the minuscule risk. I have left our bikes unlocked in the open garage in front of our house for 25 years. If they are stolen once in 25 years it will be worth it- I think that is about the statistical probability in our neighbourhood.

You did the right thing op

I think someone coming in and potentially stealing your child or hurting someone is worse than someone stealing some bikes. Can people get into your house from your open garage or is there a locked door?

Greenfinch7 · 14/10/2024 12:20

Do you really think people are going into houses and stealing children while their parents are there? Garage is a separate building from our house anyway...

Possibly not stealing, but I'd rather not give child abusers access to my kids while I sleep. I didn't do a police check on every other guest and visitor funnily enough, so it's a small but very serious risk i don't fancy taking. I'm all for being relaxed about my own possessions, but not when it comes to my children's safety.

Mr & Mrs McCann, is that you?

Shoemadlady · 14/10/2024 23:04

Does it automatically lock when closed and can't be opened from outside?

HiCandles · 14/10/2024 23:12

Gosh I would hate this. I admit I am a worrier but I wouldn't have got any sleep knowing me and my family weren't safely locked in. Presumably you're home now, OP. Any update from Airbnb? Have the hosts responded?

No it was definitely not that sophisticated!

Very much home now. I put in my review, no reply to our review that included this info. They left a really positive review for us. So no real update beyond the last one!
