To ask wtf is this back pain and what to do?

I’ve had PGP (dull pain, achy hips) since the second trimester and I’m now almost 35 weeks. Since the weekend I have had an extremely- extremely - painful right joint on the back of my pelvis. No pain at all when I’m completely still.

It gets worse as the day goes along and is definitely caused by movement like walking and going up and down stairs. Come the evening time the pain is making me wince and want to swear. I’ve broken my foot before and if I didn’t know better I would say it was the same pain. Severe biting type pain every time I get up and down from the sofa or bed at night. Would give the pain a 9/10 when moving tbh.

It doesn’t travel down my leg so surely is not sciatica and feels much worse than just PGP given I am visibly hobbling and limping about, if I do manage to walk ie went to the supermarket earlier I am going at a much much slower pace and every step hurts.

What should I do? It’s a bit late for a physio referral I think, but equally I have another 2.5 weeks of work and could have another 5-6 weeks of pregnancy. I am very keen not to cause any long lasting damage.

Anyone had similar or any suggestions?

Rest. Private physio. Birth ball rotation. Belly band.

it usually eases straight away after birth, but it’s brutal. 🫂

Sacroiliac joint aggravated/misaligned/struggling with pregnancy changes.

If you can go and see an osteopath who specialises in pregnancy.

Oh god, I had this from 16w pregnant and was convinced I was damaged because I could barely walk and as time went on sitting was unbearable and then so was lying down but also standing up! It’s a nightmare.

Nothing really eased it I’m sorry to say, a massive pregnancy pillow helped at night.

The day of my c section it completely disappeared. I mean seriously just went away the day I gave birth. I was so relieved I honestly felt like I was free (even with the pain of having a section and barely being able to walk in a different way). The pelvic pain was 100% worse than recovery from my emcs.

Hang in there.

Googled and looks like it is this. It honestly feels broken though and walking aggravates it but I can’t just not walk, surely

That’s so crazy that it disappeared so fast. It must literally just be the weight of everything that causes it then, or certainly doesn’t help. Thank you

Oddly it wasn’t the weight for me as it set in at 16w when I didn’t have any form of bump or anything! The midwives literally did not care they gave me a crutch and a band and sent me on my way, it isn’t fair really, but I don’t think there’s much they can do for it.

I was pregnant with twins though and it did get worse and worse right to the end but I promise, it does go away almost instantly.

See your GP. There might not be anything they can do but they should be able to give you something to manage the pain.

Also look at KT taping - a friend has bad SPD and swears by it. She also uses a swimming pool to relieve the weight of her bump.

I had this, but left hand side. It was sacro illiac joint being misaligned... had an amazing physio who was also an osteopath. She did a manouver on me every few weeks that helped it back into place, I think it was called Chicago? Amazing. It always moved out again as ligaments were so loose, but honestly the relief was incredible. And then once I gave birth, boom - all fine again.

Definitely recommend finding a physio who is also an osteo and importantly, specialises in pregnancy and PGP.

I feel for you. It is so painful and debilitating.

I had an unstable pelvis when I was pregnant with my second in my 2nd trimester. My mobility was significantly impaired I could barely walk and sitting to stand was difficult. A big pregnancy/breastfeeding pillow helped at night to sleep.

I saw a osteopath who specialised in pregnancy - she was amazing. I think I saw her around 3-4 times before giving birth & it really helped. In fact I was lucky for it to be resolved ahead of my due date. I managed a VB and no ongoing problems.

Really hope you can get some specialist support.
