If someone earns £15,000 a month. They have a student loan. They pay in 10% into their pension.
They take home less than £7,000 a month.

But the comparison is you earning £2333 and taking home £1,166

This is one of those wind up posts again.

Ignore it

No. I pay road tax separately. Road maintenance isn't paid for through general taxation.

It is actually - I don’t think we have any hypothecated taxes now (happy to be corrected!). I think we’ve had a few social care levies and NI increases which the government has tried to link to the nhs to make them more popular but roads are maintained out of general taxation (which tax on vehicles contributes to).

UseOfWeapons · 08/10/2024 16:53

On the information you've given...what's your point?

oldwhyno · 08/10/2024 16:53

Our tax system creates some horrible marginal rates, but this is perhaps the worst possible example!

Fluffyhoglets · 08/10/2024 16:54

It's the Tax and NI the OP is whinging about really!

ImNunTheWiser · 08/10/2024 16:54

IT'S A PLOPPER EVERYONE - STAND DOWN!

Is "broad sweep of a statement" a euphonism for talking out of your arse?

I supposebwhatbi mean more specifically is that i don't usebthe health service or education. I do if course benefit from all the other architecture of state, yes. But i do not feel like i get any value for money the amount I pay. I realise that isn't the point of tax, but it's how I feel.

These posts are funny as they reveal how financially illiterate the poster is considering they are in the top 1% of earners in the country.

Yes, exactly

vivamexico · 08/10/2024 16:55

You get just under £9000 take home if you don't have a student loan or pay into a pension so the £7000 is rather misleading...

CeeJay81 · 08/10/2024 16:56

My question is why does someone earn 15k a month in the first place? The inequality in this world is shocking. 7k a month is still a lot of money.

Anotherparkingthread · 08/10/2024 16:57

While this is probably a wind up post, it's worth mentioning that this isn't necessarily true. If it is, then you don't need advice from Mumsnet you need an accountant. I'm not suggesting any creative accounting or fiddling any numbers but there are so many good accountants who can save you money various ways. You need proper financial advice.

CautiousLurker · 08/10/2024 16:57

LOL if you are earning 15k per month (180k pa) you’ve had a huge return on your investment. Being able to pay 18k into a pension annually is a huge privilege.

So you won't call an ambulance if you are hit by a bus tomorrow?

bluescreendot · 08/10/2024 16:59

Dorisbonson · 08/10/2024 16:31

What do you think people should earn? Do you think it should be capped? How do you feel about some people who can earn more than that cap moving overseas? Do you think that the UK would be a better place without globally top level scientists, surgeons, technology experts, entertainers, musicians, architects, academics etc etc?

Personally not keen on levelling down.

No need to level down. A bit of levelling out in this country would be preferable.

If people were paid what they were actually worth then carers, nurses and teachers would be earning enough to live on. Greed is out of control in developed countries and someone bitching and moaning about only earning 7k a month is hysterical. If they want to work and live in England and enjoy the privileges we have here, they need to pay their taxes. Otherwise go and live somewhere like Dubai where you can keep your money but good luck if you're a woman, or gay.

The incessant moaning from the wealthy in this country about how hard done by they are is tiresome, and rather embarrassing.

No I think it's a troll post trying to get people annoyed.

dottiehens · 08/10/2024 16:59

If you have that earning capability I would advise to leave to a country where they value you more. At that salary you get very little in return here as you are seeing. Add the shitty miserable weather and the lot who wants to solve all the problems of the world. In the blink of an eye you are of retirement age with all your hard earnings drained into this mess.

WhycantIkeepthisbloodyplantalive · 08/10/2024 16:59

It's absolutely criminal, I see it as nothing less than theft. Unfortunately one way or another if you live in a westernised country this will always be the case.

The OP accidentally put the wrong number into a take home pay calculator.

If they were really earning that much then they would work out how to maximise their pension contributions.

They have also missed out the benefits they get that would be taxed.

Of course. As I said up thread, of course I do actually use these things or benefit from them being available. I just don't feel like o get anything for the tax I pay. Which again, I realise isn't the point.

Animatic · 08/10/2024 17:01

15K before or after tax?

Unfortunately due to the last government running down the country's infrastructure and stealing taxpayer money to give to their pals everyone feels hard done by.

I've lived in countries where I paid more tax. The fact that the streets were clean and things didn't look run down meant I didn't feel ripped off.
