Ridiculous CF fb marketplace woman or me?

Lighthearted kind of but saw an item I had been wanting on Facebook marketplace as part of a USED job lot - the job lot already looked quite overpriced to me but there was only one item in particular I was interested in so didn’t really care.
I contacted the woman and asked if she would sell the particular item separately. She said she would, for £100. I replied asking if it was used (I knew it was but wanted to highlight this to her) and told her they were selling brand new on Amazon for £80.
Her reply shocked me a bit as she said it was used and if I didn’t like it, I should just ‘buy it on Amazon then.’
AIBU or is this bizarre? I know she can sell things for whatever price she likes but it seems very counterintuitive to sell for more than it is new? It isn’t something that appreciates in value at all - imagine something like an air fryer. I feel like nobody will buy it so it’s a huge waste of her time.

It isn’t, it’s quite a basic household item like a microwave or something but a bit less common

Is it a Mr Frosty?!

Wishthiswasntmypost · 08/10/2024 12:52

She refused your offer. End.

No need to call her ridiculous CF?

Just walk away and buy on Amazon 'new' with lower blood pressure

Ok fair enough everyone understood

Job lots often have 1-2 desirable “anchor” items to drive the price and get other things sold for low amounts which might not otherwise sell at all.
It’s how sellers “price” their lot.

If it's a job lot, she;s probably looking for someone who can take the whole lot at once, she doesn't want to be faffing around with multiple buyers, many of whom never turn up to collect.

Yes just buy the new one.

It may have been that she couldn't be arsed worth the time and effort of splitting the bundle unless the money made it worthwhile.

Though sometimes I've been a bit shocked at the price expectations people have for their second hand stuff. I saw a Le Creuset griddle pan on Ebay. Made a buy it now offer which was rejected. Seller counter offfered at a price about 75% of new which i rejected. It didn't sell at auction and meanwhile i sourced another one. Seller relisted it and contacted me to offer me the chance to buy it at the price I'd offered. I refused. It sold for less than half my offer.

AIBU or is this bizarre?

YABU.

And no, her reply wasn’t bizarre at all.

Your outlook is though.

I think the term CF had very overused on here.

She might be unwise but then others have given reasons why some might pay more for the single item.

I once bought a shelf from IKEA and then decided to sell it because it didn't fit the space I wanted it for. I had asked for the same price that I paid for it but when the guy came to buy it, I didn't have change and he said to just keep the £20 (I had asked for £15). Sometimes on fb market place things go for more than they're worth because of the sheer convenience of it (can pick it up that day, don't have to worry about putting it together, don't have to pay delivery blah blah). So I think you cant always compare it to retail prices 🤷‍♀️

We just sold some ikea shelves and I was amazed at the level of interest and people were prepared to pay well over half what they are new.

Sometimes people make things more expensive than they’re worth when they really don’t want to do the work or sell a particular item. But bonus, they might actually consider it if people want to pay stupid money. Dh often overprices jobs if they are really inconvenient and he wants to put someone off. It’s not good to just refuse to quote or to not turn up to do the job (what lots of tradespeople do), but he’ll tack a few hundred £££ extra on there with the hopes of just putting people off. On occasion, they are thrilled with the quote and even though it’s an annoying small job, he’ll do it for the extra. You can think of it as an inconvenience surcharge.

Breaking up a job lot and dealing with individual sellers is a massive pain. She didn’t want to do it, but if you were dumb enough to pay silly money, she would have. Sounds fine to me. You both had an option to choose to walk away and you took it.
