My toddler who is very obviously on the spectrum rather severely, we are waiting for paediatric appointment but there's a 3 year waiting list☹️ in the mean time there are a few things that concern me, she's only been walking for a few months ever since she learned to walk she spend hours a day frantically pacing up and down the halls, back and forth in and out rooms, other than that she's extremely fixated to the tv, when I turn it off she grunts and hums and gets quiet frustrated. She doesn't speak or have any words, no eye contact, no understanding, no response to name, hates cuddles and affection, I'm really struggling to find activities and something different that she might enjoy to do other than the pacing and tv, she has so many toys but just bashes them around and gets bored within 5 minutes, I try to play with her but she doesn't engage with me, as soon as you sit with her she uses you as a climbing frame, tries to eat and put all my hair ect, please mums with experience of children on the more severe end of the spectrum share your advice.

Hello there, do you have any input from services for your LO? Does she go to nursery at all?

She's only 17 months health visitor raised concerns on one year check when she was quite significantly delayed I requested we waited until 15 months and reviewed again because she was still quite young, 16 months came by and she scored 0 on communication and personal and social development. Health visitor has referred to speech and language, portage and paediatrics but o haven't heard anything from anyone yet, she's not in nursery either

Hi there. Does she go to nursery? Are you in England? Has nursery expressed concerns? If you are in England you could go down the ehc process as this could bring professionals in earlier. In the meantime check out local groups for children with autism. Again if you are in England check your LA website under "local offer" to see what is available. You could also go back to your GP and ask to be referred to camhs rather than paediatrics x

It’s good that the HV has referred for portage etc although these will take time to come through. It’s worth asking if there are any support groups for parents in the area, these can be a wealth of advice and support for parents in your situation. It can feel rather isolating and meeting other parents can really help.

Have you tried sensory activities that don't have a set purpose? It can take a while to experiment with which sensory activities a child likes, but examples are:

  • Cornflour in water (gloop).
  • A big bowl of raw pasta that she can run her fingers through
  • Rice in a tray
  • Paint that she can put her feet in or her fingers
  • Sand

She probably isn't ready to 'play' yet.
