Changing child's name by deed poll. Advice needed

Hi all,

I have a 10 month old and want to change her surname by deed poll. Throughout pregnancy I always said I wanted her to have mine and my partners surnames as double barrell. Long story short when the time came to it I said she could just have my partners name. I was full of endorphins and with in the newborn bubble.

Fast forward a year and it's my biggest regret. I have a small family and it'll only be me passing my name on. I've spoke with my partner who understands and accepts this.

Has anyone changed their little one's surname? I have been looking online but am finding it rather confusing. Can you just do this online or is it a form you apply for and send off?

Also, will it say on her birth certificate her former name? Or will it just look like the original but with amended version
TIA xx

Is your partner in agreement? I think my sister looked into this but it needs agreement from the baby’s dad which he wouldn’t give so she couldn’t

We changed our DDs middle name so not quite the same however, the birth cert is the same, you get a document which proves the change of name which you will need to provide sometimes like to a bank for example. You need her dads permission if he's on the birth certificate.

Thanks all. Yes her dad is in agreement. He's a little disappointed but he understands. She will still have his name but just mine aswell. :-)

Did you get a form to fill in or online? I'm finding it quite confusing!

If your child is less than 12 months old you can amend the birth certificate - this was done for Billie Piper. Her name at birth was Leighann!

Oh really, thank you. I didn't know this. Do you know how to go about it? Would I go back to the registry office?

Weird that he's a little disappointed. How would he feel if it was just your surname she bears? He should give over with the feeling disappointed. It's not the 1950s.

Oh give over, he’s allowed to be disappointed. It’s not like he’s objecting to it.

@HollyLollyMollyJolly you've read one sentence and really ran away with it there 😅 it's funny how much a stranger can presume from so little!

Allowed to feel disappointed that she won't have just his surname, that she'd also have her mother's surname as well as his? Sure. My question there still stands but not going to argue. I just find that single act ridiculous but whatever works for you all. Didn't run with anything. Hope my other suggestion helps though.

I think you should call the registry office to check but I don't think you can change a babys surname, only their forename on the birth certificate. Therefore I think you have to do it by deed poll

Change your name by deed poll

A deed poll recognises a change of name of an adult or child - make your own, use official forms, or get one through a specialist agency or solicitor

Oh this sounds better then. Didn't see it before posting.

I think that procedure is just for first names.

It’s not very clear what you do in this situation. As a pp said OP phone your local registrar office for advice.

I think it will be either reregister the birth or use a deed poll but best to get advice.

OP when you double barrell the name make sure you use a hyphen between the names otherwise people will just use the last name.
