To think that my 16mo old cracking potty training in a day means she's a genius?

Just that really. My just turned 16 month old has been interested in the toilet for a few weeks and very keen to get changed when dirty so on Saturday, despite reservations about her age, we went for it. She's been phenomenal. She takes herself to the potty if she needs it even if you're not in the room (discovered that when I was getting the pram ready in the hall), will let you know accurately if she needs a wee or poo and will also have a wee if you ask her to if you explain we're going out now. Today we've been all over town with zero accidents (actually she's only had two tiny wees on the floor full stop and that was Saturday). Is she a genius?! I think so.

Beware OP. I congratulated myself on similar when my DD was almost 20 months. Dry day and night within one week. Hoorah! Put her in PJs one night later that week (the ones with the feet ....) and yep, she shat in them and it slid down her leg into the foot part which she duly trod in. That was a messy moment ... It only happened the once though 😅

My DS got fully toilet trained over a bank holiday weekend when he was 18 months old. I was clueless about how to go about it so followed something I found online that was written by an American woman who claimed near 100% success. To my amazement it worked.

He never used a potty once instead preferring to use a child seat on an adult toilet. He’s nearly 4 now and hasn’t had a single accident since being trained.

I was so pleased it was such a straightforward thing to resolve but still have no idea if it was pure luck rather than any great training technique.

I feel really sorry for those who have struggled with it as life is so busy with a toddler and you can do without extra chores to deal with.

Can you share the link to the Anerican woman? Would like to try the 'straight to toilet' method.

With my little one I mean - I am thankfully potty trained! 😅

gretathegremlin · 07/10/2024 20:38

My mum often tells the story of how 3 year old me, just after we moved into the house my parents still live in and with it my brand new big girl bed, took myself off to the toilet in the middle of the night for a wee. The next morning she found my nappy on the floor next to the toilet and me in bed declaring "no more nappy!" And I never had an accident after that.

Unfortunately my own children didn't get that memo 😂

Firsttimetrier · 07/10/2024 20:39

That’s amazing! We just potty trained our 26 month old in 3 days and he’s been night dry for the last 4 days and I was thinking he was a genius and was telling his nursery he was this morning 😂

Was totally expecting a literal shitshow on our new beige carpets!

OhDearMuriel · 07/10/2024 20:41

Jeez, so you've come on here to bore everyone about your 'genius' child.

At that age their muscles aren't fully developed, so she will have accidents.

News flash, they all learn in their own time. It's nothing to show off about.

Imfreetofeelgood · 07/10/2024 20:46

Fantastic 👏👏

Hahaha.
Don't have any more children is all I can say. Some get it early, some don't. Well done to your little girl, that is fantastic! BUT don't judge parents and children who have struggled, please, because I have had three children and three totally different experiences of success/abject failure using the exact same strategies with each child. It was humbling and the judgemental parents didn't help.

Well my son was done by 20 months so I'd anticipated a fall from grace with this one but she's gone one better!

She's probably peaked or that turns out to be her special skill. We all have some sort of peak in our lives, what if this is hers?

My DD's special toddler skill was getting her shoes on the right feet. Sadly some other children have more interesting special skills.

Haha mine was potty training apparently and my DD took to it immediately - I so wish her super power had been amazing sleep though 😂

I'm sure she will have accidents. But so far we haven't had any. And that includes a five hour period with no wees so her bladder is clearly stronger than mine 🤷

Of course she is a genius! As a parent, when they pick something up so quickly no matter what it is, how can you not marvel!

The other day my kid was a genius for checking on indeed what jobs earn what wages before she chose her options to see what path she wanted to head towards, that never crossed my mind as a 13/14 year old.!!

Well done! Still struggling to potty train my son who just turned three 😱 my family keep quoting that statistic to me about kids starting school not being potty trained. And I'm basically a social pariah among my NCT group.

Oh that's super hard. My little boy's best friend has only just got to grips with it at 3.5, but that's made zero difference to what we've done at meet ups etc.. Can't believe your group is making you feel crap over it 😢

I had one like this. An absolute dream. It's a gift to the mum more than anything else. God bless him. 😂

My other child took about 2 and a half years before I could confidently say he was potty trained. 😫

You win some, you lose some.

AegonT · 07/10/2024 21:05

That is extremely impressive and two months before what anyone will normally tell you is even possible! You have saved yourself a lot of nappy changing and she can be clean and independent.

I do have to tell you that my more difficult to potty train one is academically exceptional. Her sister who was younger and easier to train is not.

Revolutionaryb · 07/10/2024 21:05

My toddler did the same. Actually I only needed to explain it to him once and he immediately did it.
But that was 19 years ago and I now know for certain that he's far from being a genius. He's quite clever but not exceptional.

johnd2 · 07/10/2024 21:06

Definitely one for the CV!
I've worked out it's more luck than skill, but if you've had the luck then take it for sure.

TwistedSisters · 07/10/2024 21:07

Good for you and her 😁!
Have to say, I think leaving toilet training until 3 (or older) is far too late. Most children are perfectly capable of training by 2ish.

PepaWepa · 07/10/2024 21:10

My daughter potty trained at 17 months during the day, wasn't then dry at nights until age 5!
She's extremely clever but I wouldn't class her as a genius.

BabbleBee · 07/10/2024 21:10

If this is what brings joy to your day, grab it and hold on to it. Celebrate all the wins!

My eldest DD is 21 years old now, and boy do I wish I could go back and feel all those wonderful moments again.

Booooo! This is not the pattern I wanted 😂 sure it is just a combination of the right timing, not being ill, strong comprehension skills and an awareness of herself - but also now I've written that down she'll also go far in life if she can keep that combination going!

I was really lucky with both of mine, DS was toilet trained in 3 days at age 21 months.
DD was at 2 years 1 month in 5 days.
Both of them were out of nappies at night the same time as in the day and somehow neither one of the has ever wet the bed. And as the are now 18 and 15 I think I’m pretty safe saying never.

Sorted! Lots of washing saved! It's very nice to not be bulk buying nappies any more.

Ohh long shot, but do you remember who it was by? Trying to get mine potty trained and it's not going too well! 😞

This is the guide I followed. It’s a bit easier in the Summer as DH and I were able to spend 3 days in the garden making cleaning up much easier but no reason not to try it indoors .
Good luck!
