Why?

OneEdgySheep · 07/10/2024 18:12

I think you need to add a bit more information OP.
I, for one, have no idea what this is about.

Doggymummar · 07/10/2024 18:12

What do you mean?

NewPinkJacket · 07/10/2024 18:13

I mean if you're going to start a thread you may as well tell us what you're talking about?

hoarahloux · 07/10/2024 18:13

Never had one for exactly this reason.

Changingplace · 07/10/2024 18:14

A what now?

Dotto · 07/10/2024 18:14

Some sort of data ownership thing Katherine Ryan was banging on about. That they have a right to sell your DNA data to anybody, not 100% sure of the details but think it's probably been overblown.

SausageinaBun · 07/10/2024 18:16

They've had a big data breach. Not sure when. Here's a radio programme about it.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 07/10/2024 18:19

I don't know the specifics of this 23 and me thing, but it didn't exactly take Einstein to figure out that these DNA testing things were going to end badly.

Omg.

’October 6th, 2023 - the day before Hamas launches its attack on Israel - a data set stolen from at-home DNA testing company 23andMe is posted on the dark web. A hacker under the username Golem claims it contains millions of data points relating to Ashkenazi Jews living globally. A vast repository of 23andMe's account holder's personal information is then offered to anyone willing to pay for it - including names, birth dates, genetic ancestry and location details. Not only is it 23andMe's biggest ever security breach but apparently it's been motivated by racism.’

They end very well for lots of people

Flughafenkoenigin · 07/10/2024 18:25

The data breach was last year, they were hacked. The company are having to pay $30 million compensation to customers whose data was compromised. Other lawsuits may be brought against them. Now the company is basically bankrupt.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 07/10/2024 18:27

I've just deleted mine because once the company is sold, the terms and conditions can change on how your data is handled.

It was interesting for a time but I don't use it anymore anyway.

SauviGone · 07/10/2024 18:28

The company is on the brink of collapse and the very small print in their T&C’s make clear that in the event of a merger or acquisition, customer information is a saleable asset.

So anyone that has their DNA stored in there, your info can and and probably will now be sold.

BeerForMyHorses · 07/10/2024 18:29

Does deleting your account actually delete any of your data though?

I've never done one because I have never trusted it.

I don’t hang about on fortune.com unfortunately 🥲 And haven’t seen it reported in the UK papers.

ButterAsADip · 07/10/2024 18:33

Bit late isn’t it? They’ll still have all your
data I’d imagine? I dunno, hopefully when you deactivate they destroy your data but i think it would he unusual for that to be standard?

coffeesaveslives · 07/10/2024 18:33

I don't understand why anyone would hand over their DNA to some random online company in the first place.

But the hack has already happened and they already have your data? What will deleting your account actually achieve Confused

I'm not talking about the hack, the company is looking to sell therefore you don't know where and who your data will end up with..

People interested in their heritage... maybe.

A US company should still have to apply the GDPR to European data.
