Reeves ‘drops plans for pension tax raid’

Chancellor reportedly abandons move amid concerns it could disproportionately affect up to a million public sector workers.

Since when has public sector workers become the 'Golden Child'?

Scrutiny? They've not done one budget yet. Are we seriously comparing complaints about 14 years of absolute shite with complaints about what the Telegraph says Labour might do? Oh dear.

They have been active outside the budget.

Some think badly, others not. It will be commented on

minipie · 07/10/2024 16:23

No government ever really knows what they are doing

That’s why we have the Civil Service

Personally, given the repeated tax cock ups over the 40 years I've been an accountant, I have no confidence in the civil servants either!

Didimum · 07/10/2024 16:43

I think they're on a timer.

Anyone fancy Mumsnet bingo?

Boomer55 · 07/10/2024 16:45

No, they are clueless. As with every government that went before.🤷‍♀️

ByMerryKoala · 07/10/2024 16:49

Of course, all the sceptics are bots. They can't possibly be real people wondering what's in store for an upcoming budget when the government seems to be as callous as the last. That's why Starmer's approval rating tanks as each week goes by...all those bloody bots 🙄

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/10/2024 16:51

No, they are the group who make it possible for everything else to run (try running a business if your workforce aren’t educated, healthy, able to travel on the roads etc).

Well said!

randomchap · 07/10/2024 16:51

They've not even announced a budget as yet. Speculation at this point is useless.

They've made pledges during the election and outlined a manifesto.

This site looks to be holding them to account

https://pledgeprogress.co.uk

You can use it to see which of the pledges have been broken, compromised, in progress, completed, etc. For example halving violence against woman and girls

https://pledgeprogress.co.uk/pledge/halve-violence-of-women-and-girls-by-2034.html

is classed as in progress

The Telegraph and other media may be speculating, i.e. purely guessing or fabricating. Or they may have sources. Plenty of people in the Labour Party and the Treasury are happy to leak. There were certainly plenty of sources inside Labour spilling the beans to the media about problems with Sue Gray.

We don’t know either way. But that’s not a basis for deciding that this is definitely no more than speculation.

As for the numbers of these threads and ‘bingo’ 🙄, can those posters seriously not remember the threads criticising and attacking the Tories all the damn time? The place was carpeted with them.

Hatty65 · 07/10/2024 16:56

Yawn.

Can you shove this shit into Politics so that we can hide the daily/hourly Labour bashing threads?

It's so boring.

ByMerryKoala · 07/10/2024 16:58

The same articles, speculating on the autumn budget generally and on the backtrack on rejigging pension contributions, can be found in the Guardian too.

EasternStandard · 07/10/2024 17:00

Didimum · 07/10/2024 16:43

Anyone fancy Mumsnet bingo?

If you do
’bot’
’Labour bashing’
Any form of ‘I can’t hide a thread I don’t want to read’

Edited

It's just the wording of all the OP's in these threads seems a bit weird and contrived. Like they aren't written by an actual person.

I totally know there were loads of threads slagging off the Tories back in the day.

I'm not a massive Labour supporter but I think they should be given a chance.

Octaviusoctober · 07/10/2024 17:05

Op no they don't
Unfortunately no one really does because each set it circumstances is different anyway.
Who has the guide book one how to run a country through a pandemic or global financial crash?

Report it if you aren't happy with it instead of banging on about bots, CCHQ, etc

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2024 17:09

Labour are finding out the hard way that being in government, and having to put your money where your mouth is, is an awful lot harder than being in opposition and just criticising everything the Other Lot do.

MichaelandKirk · 07/10/2024 18:02

Just report to mnhq if that’s what you think instead of calling anyone not saying what you think a ‘bot’

This was NEVER going to happen. When everyone on here was crowing for it with a fuck you higher earners. I explained why and I even said the excuse they will roll out - public sector.

No-one ever touches pension tax relief - with good reason. The money is used for investment. The government would create huge unintended consequences in the countries’ investment. Not to mention brain drain, higher earners changing behaviour, leaving, etc, etc. Was never, ever going to happen. Every economist worth their salt and not on the payroll of the government warned against it.

Easy way out? Blame the Drs and UPS teachers. They would be dragged into this extra tax. Considering we were short of drs because of pension issues - not a great start. By blaming the public sector, they can save face a little. Pretend that this would have been an unmitigated financial disaster.

Dog whistle politics of envy for the uneducated masses.

Fescue · 07/10/2024 18:15

Exactly where can Rachel Reeves go to collect more taxes? They have ruled out raising the four largest taxes that collectively already raise 85% of total tax receipts. The next largest, SDLT, will hamper plans to build 300,000 homes a year. There is little else to tax and Reeves has ruled out a wealth tax.

There is nowhere else to go except break promises and do further u-turns - but on income tax, VAT and NIC. And a wealth tax, after all.

They have no choice but to u-turn.

You were right. Can you get them to do the same with VAT?

It’s odd though with some of these row backs eg nom dom the backlash if anyone said it was a poor policy pre GE and b) why is the chancellor slower than posters on mn

Seashor · 07/10/2024 18:20

No they don’t! They never did and they never have. We have very poor choice of political parties . I loathe their ‘ pull the ladder up after me’ mentality . It’s a race to the bottom.

Because they went for the lowest common denominator, I hate to say it. “Loooooky here, fuck the rich, vote for us.” People clapped like seals and voted for it. We don’t value education as a society and it reflected in our ability to think for ourselves.

Problem is, higher earners have never been taxed so high under the Tory government. Middle and lower earners so low. Mad but true. There is only one place to go and Labour couldn’t say it aloud.

Pension tax relief would have been an unmitigated financial catastrophe. It’s why so many economists warned against it and it is left alone. It takes the tiniest amount of fiscal knowledge to understand but the chancellor didn’t. Mad.

People won’t understand this backtrack because they don’t understand the consequences. Some nonsense about fuck the rich or something. If they knew what they were talking about - they’d have seen this coming too. As I say, seals clapping when the whistle blows. Now all confused because they will lose their ball.

Grantanow · 07/10/2024 18:30

Too much chatter based on Tory press speculation. Government is a lot harder than being in Opposition so I expect Labour will take time to get to grips. I allow for that given the appalling 14 years of Tory mess ups, revolving door Prime Ministers, Trussonomics, scandals, etc. We need them to repair public services and that won't be easy or rapid.

IWantToGetOffHelp · 07/10/2024 18:41

Well 25% of our sixth formers at my independent school have got a place at the 2 local grammars. Our other 6th form schools and colleges are fairly shite so most of our students stayed for 6th form previously. Now we’ve lost 25% of them. They all gained places at the grannars that previously would have gone to other local children. These are children with wealthy parents who just objected to the VAT. We are considering closing our 6th form if the trend continues so there will be more wanting those places. What a mess.
