Remove doors from doorway

I have a double door separating my living room from my kitchen. The doors are ALWAYS open.

There's even a little table on a lamp in front of one of the open doors...

I've decided to take the doors off to create a bigger space.

My home is a large new build.

What does everyone think ? In general of just taking the doors off in a situation like this ?

It feels really different with the doors off and I like it. My H doesn't like it as much.

But surely it's silly to have open doors as a constant feature of your living room walls, if that makes sense ? Now they're off, you can actually see the walls and it creates more wall space. Now the lamp on the table is against the wall and makes much more sense.

Thoughts ?

@AllAboutNiamh guess that depends on your LA and what the BCO wants to see then. Ours does want fire doors on the bedrooms and living rooms despite that, as we have a kitchen area open to the hallway.

@ForPearlViper WOW! Are you my OH?!! 😂

Not unless I have an extremely complicated double life and a split personality!

My living room door was rubbish! It opened outwards into a small hallway. So was always in the way. Although if it had opened inwards it would have been more inconvenient. So I couldnt switch it round. I never ever closed it. So I just took it off.

I'm with an HA and they've seen it as they installed a fire alarm system to the mains and they didn't say anything about it. So I presume it was OK. Where I live is 3 storeys and I'm on floors 2 and 3. So not sure about the legal standpoint. But if you have a door that you never close then it's not going to stop a fire so why keep it?

Just make sure you replace it when you move out otherwise they will charge you (far too much) to replace it.

The inspector can only apply the building regulations and what the Approved Document says. They can’t ask anyone to go above and beyond the regulations. If they ask for what’s not in the regs, they should be challenged.

Maybe insurance? If it's completely missing your slihery insurance company might use it as an excuse to not pay up if your house burns down?
