To think someone is slumming in this house

A house near me was broken into last year and the occupants moved out. Last night I noticed glass on the driveway and window possibly round the side looked smashed. Tonight, I took the dog a walk and all the curtains are open and lights are on and I saw a man in there in the living room but the house still looks fairly empty. I think someone has broken in and is slumming in the house. Shall I report to 101?

If you're certain it's an empty house then yes, he may be squatting in it (not slumming). Might be worth giving 101 a call to see what they say.

Hang on, the lights are on? So someone is paying an electric bill? Yes, ring 101.

just because you can see a guy inside doesn't mean you should call the police! maybe he's just moved in - and whether he's squatting, renting, or has bought the place, this is not a police matter. if the person who owns the house doesn't want him there, they can/ should deal with it. for all you know, they've given him permission to be there or asked him to do some work there. iit doesn't sound like he's trashing the place, making loud noise late at night or doing anything else that's anti-social.

if you're insatiably curious about him, you could always try knocking on the door and welcoming your new neighbour to the street!

Slumming?

Do you mean squatting?

Do you mean squatting?

slumming it isn’t an offence. How do you know what standards this man is used to anyway?

Jelly0 · 06/10/2024 21:22

Sorry, yes, squatting

Just worried because of the smashed window at the side and the house hasn't been up for rent or sale

Why worry?
You have no idea if the house has been up for sale or rent - they don't always put up signs you know.
This man hasn't done anything that needs to concern you.
It's much better to have someone living in a house than it sitting empty for months.
Can't you just see this as a positive thing?
