To have thought I'd feel better by now (medical)?

I had a general anaesthetic on Wednesday for a hysteroscopy to remove a large polyp and fit a mirena coil
All went to plan, it was day case and I was home by 8pm

Cramping/pain has already completely stopped and did within 48. I'm bleeding a little but mildly, and that's to be expected.
But my recovery from the GA (i assume) is taking ages.....

I feel awful, like I've had the flu and can't get better. I don't have fever or any actual signs of infection but my body is so wobbly and jittery and weak. I'm getting lots of rest and some ok sleep (just woke up from 7.5 straight hours) but I just feel kind of shaky and jittery.

Really reminds me of when you're so sick your body can't settle - even though I don't actually feel unwell if that makes sense.
Also some waves of anxiety and tearfulness too.

I'm self employed and can wfh all next week so it doesn't really matter in the immediate term but I wouldn't feel safe driving yet, and I really thought I'd be ok to get on with life within a few days. We have 2 young kids and my husband is a shift worker. I can't just check out of life !

How long does it usually take to get over a GA? I was only out for about half an hour!

I'm hoping it's the GA and not my body hating the Mirena

It takes me seven days. I’m a bit better every day but it’s on the seventh day I wake up and think “yep, all good now “.

Thanks, that's helpful. I definitely feel less brain foggy than I did a couple of days ago but I just hate this wired/jittery feeling running through me. Horrid.

Hopefully I'll be back to normal by midweek

It can take a week, everyone is different. When I had my gallbladder out the operation part was fine but it took me ages to get over the general anaesthetic. I hope you feel better soon.

I was told to do lots of calm, deep breathing exercises. I remember sleeping alot for a few days.

I have only had a GA once and was mostly over it in about 12hrs. Although I did feel very car sick in a car 24hrs after it. I was very lucky though. Other people have told me it can take them a month to feel normal again after one.

I don’t think there is a specific time frame to be honest. I would imagine a week or so is the usual. Take some rest and look after yourself 😊

Takes me a good week to get over a general anaesthetic.
Have a gentle week.

LostittoBostik · 06/10/2024 08:49

Thanks everyone. Seems a week or more is quite usual, so will just take it very slowly for the next two days.

I was over it within 24 hours my first 2 ops. Had another a few months ago and it took me a good week and a half to feel normal and safe to drive. Try to keep yourself moving still, I made the mistake of being a coach potato because I felt so awful, and I ended up with horrible back pain for 2 weeks from sitting around doing anything I assume.

I had GA for the first time this summer and it absolutely knocked me for six. I felt like a zombie for days.

SeaToSki · 06/10/2024 09:04

Just keep an eye on yourself, it maybe a GA post recovery thing (although it seems a tad long to me) but it also may be a reaction to the Mirena. Some women have really strong negative reactions to it (my DSis became suicidal) and have to have it removed. I personally became horribly sensitive and teary on one hand and cross and shouty on the other..so I had it out. So keep a close watch on yourself
