Husband poured boiling water down bathroom sink, huge row!

I have a blocked bathroom sink upstairs, my husband tried pouring kettle boiling water down the sink, I told him not to, but when he poured it, smoke from the boiling water was coming out from where the pipes are no water appears to be leaking, just steam from the pipes.

has my husband caused problems? Am I being unreasonable in being angry with him?

could the boiling hot water have melted or caused a leak in the pipes?

Would steam be able to come out of the pvc pipes?

Why do you think the steam has come from the pipes? It's come from the boiling water. But because it's a gas, the steam rises and so you see it coming up the plug hole.

And steam is not the same thing as smoke. If it's smoking then you have other problems (which weren't caused by the hot water)

AIright · 04/10/2024 23:06

Poor man.

Are you going to apologise to him?

bevelino · 04/10/2024 23:06

It is obviously steam rather than smoke as it is not possible for water to create smoke. I always pour water down blocked drains

Owly11 · 04/10/2024 23:07

This has got to be a joke. Do you ever drain vegetables over the sink? Vegetables that were cooked in boiling water? Hence tipping a panful of boiling water down the sink?

ScottBakula · 04/10/2024 23:07

Of course boiling water is fine , it will help desolve soap residual and clear the pipes .
As pp said a healthy dose of bicarb will also help fizz it out of place too

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 04/10/2024 23:07

The pipes will be fine OP. I've done this to clear a blocked sink and blocked shower drain. No melted pipes.

Baking soda/vinegar also helps and, when none of that works, I've used a strong washing soda solution and hot water.

OP have you been on the wine this evening?

Franjipanl8r · 04/10/2024 23:09

A quick google says domestic pvc waste pipes melt at around 160 C. So no, regular boiled water won’t have damaged the pipes.

ThatLilacHedgehog · 04/10/2024 22:59

do you think he has damaged the pipe, why was there steam?

For the same reason you get steam when you’re cooking or the kettle, the water is hot, he won’t have damaged the pipe.

pictoosh · 04/10/2024 23:10

I am stunned by this.
Fantastic.

TheShellBeach · 04/10/2024 23:10

Doesn't steam come out of your kettle when you boil it @ThatLilacHedgehog?

OP have you been on the wine this evening?

I think the answer is yes.

Ivehearditbothways · 04/10/2024 23:12

Jesus, grow up OP. And apologise to your husband.

The issue with pouring boiling water into a bathroom sink is the very small chance that it could crack the ceramic of the sink. That’s it. There is absolutely no issue with the pipes. If the sink didn’t crack then there are no issues at all. There as steam because the water was hot. Ever made a cup of tea? There is steam rising from the cup, so you run about shrieking over that?

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 04/10/2024 23:12

Don't often get angry with him & cause a row over things you clearly don't have a clue about? Poor bloke, if I had to deal with it, I'd be for a divorce.

Boiling water = steam
Steam rises

PVC pipes do not get damaged with boiling water.

a penis doesn't help unblock a sink, if you're just going to cause a row over how he does it, do it yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️

Circumferences · 04/10/2024 22:57

Yeah it's probably caused a big problem.
Caustic Soda is the thing to use not boiling water.

No it won't have done. Honestly why do people post this goady rubbish?

You do drain boiling pans of veg into your sink, I assume?

Or do you just gently soak your broccoli in lukewarm water?

Packingboxesneeded · 04/10/2024 23:14

I wrecked my toilet plumbing with caustic soda. My hand slipped while I was pouring what was meant to be a small amount in to try to unblock it and half the bottle went in. Within seconds I heard a loud crack and caustic fumes were rising out of the pan. It blew apart the seams on the pipe under the toilet floor and it was a major repair job to have it fixed !

Be careful with the caustic soda!!

Cosyblankets · 04/10/2024 23:16

Is this for real?
Boiling water = steam

Gettoachiro · 04/10/2024 23:16

>Holds head in hands<

Apologise to your husband. What a thing to have a row about!

Packingboxesneeded · 04/10/2024 23:17

On a lighter note my son sent me this after my caustic soda mishap. He said should I be worried my toilet is smoking?

JourneyToThePlacentaOfTheEarth · 04/10/2024 23:18

I used bicarb followed by boiling water from the kettle yesterday to clear a slow running sink. No problem at all

johnd2 · 04/10/2024 23:19

Boiling water is fine, at least it's not a chemical that sits in the trap and injures the person who dismantles it later to clean it manually!

DiscoBeat · 04/10/2024 23:20

At least one of you had sense. I'd apologise to him and no, boiling water doesn't cause smoke!

Canwehavesunshineplease · 04/10/2024 23:20

I always use sink and drain unblocker
