to want a glass of wine or two?

Because i've been awake with insomnia since 3.08am.

Last night, I shared a bottle of wine with DH. And to be fair, not getting back to sleep at all is unusual (though being awake for 2 hours isn't that unusual for me these days and I'm starting to realise it's drink related.

So does that make me an old soak? I like wine. I want to be able to drink some occasionally. I don't think a couple of glasses now and again is that unreasonable. Or maybe it is. See, I've even name changed for this. I'm going out this weekend and was looking forward to a few glasses. I'm feeling doomed to a really bad night already...

The wine is prob what's keeping you from sleeping well. You're just having a drink induced sleep not a proper one. Have a break for a few days maybe... no harm in a glass or two at the weekend. Don't beat yerself up about it too much - we all do it!

mankymummy · 22/04/2008 16:29

No.
get the corkscrew out.

kittywise · 22/04/2008 16:30

I find that more than 2 glasses of wine really affects my sleep and it's real pain.
I'm ok on 2 glasses but any more and I wake up all hot and bothered at about 3am and can't get back to sleep for ages

It's a bummer.

WowOoo · 22/04/2008 16:31

No booze tonight. Save yourself for the weekend or next day! Will be worth the wait....

Thing is, I have been having breaks and not drinking night after night. So I have a few night's normal sleep, feel great, think "oooh, just fancy a glass of chardonnary" and Bam! Wide awake at 3am.

I don't want to think i'm never going to enjoy a drink again but I can't see another way. And that's the bit that makes me

I am the same if I drink too much. Thankfully I seem to have a higher tolerance than you though - I can have 4 or 5 glasses!

Are you drinking red or white? We had a BBQ on Sunday I and drank about half a bottle of white throughout the day with lots of soda water and ice. I really felt I was having a drink (or two!) but had no ill effects at all.

Last night I made the mistake of having a cup of tea instead of a glass of wine at around 8pm and couldn't get to sleep till around 1!

QuitePossiblyUnreasonable · 22/04/2008 16:34

Kittywise, that's exactly it. Waking up all hot and bothered. Definitely alcohol but just seems mean and unfair.

Ruby, sadly red has the same effect for me.

Could you try something a bit different to wine then maybe? I'm a great believer in Bacardi and Coke - never gives me a hangover and I sleep really well. Too well, p'raps.

fieryfiery · 22/04/2008 16:56

Maybe you could alternate wine and water-that's what I do and it really helps

QuitePossiblyUnreasonable · 22/04/2008 16:57

Oh I'll try anything

Will be doing a serious testing of real ales this weekend.

What sort of wine do you drink?

I find anything but aussie or new zealand white makes me feel dreadful the next day. I think chilean and south african wines are the worst.

SoMuchToBits · 22/04/2008 17:13

That's interesting manky, because I have a friend who has allergy-type problems with a lot of wines (sneezing, runny nose etc) and says that Chilean wines seem to give her the least problems.

mankymummy · 22/04/2008 17:16

really? i have couple of friends who cant drink chilean either.

QP... have you experimented with different wines or diff countries?

fieryfiery · 22/04/2008 17:18

The malbec region has the best grape doesn't it?

QuitePossiblyUnreasonable · 22/04/2008 19:23

LOL yes I've tried different types. Sadly I fear it's alcohol full stop which is causing the problem. Google causes of insomnia and alcohol's a key contender. No escaping it, I just need to never drink again

I think the idea of alternating the wine with water is good - and make sure you don't drink on an empty stomach.Or too late at night. This might reduce the symptoms.

Regarding wine from different countries, I would agree that new Zealand is usually good.
