To not chose this nursery for this reason

That I noticed some black mold and some mildew round the windows.. and preschool children are able to go to the toilet by themselves but are not supervised so some don't wash their hands and are not asked if they have washed their hands

Some would be put off by the mould but I grew up in an old house so it wouldn't bother me unless it was a lot.

IME it's normal for preschoolers not to be supervised in the toilets once they're ready.

How do you know they were not asked if they washed their hands?

I am fussy and would likely not go with due to the mould.

The toilet situation though, be glad the toilets are accessible, I once viewed a preschool where the kids had to use the one adult disabled toilet in the hall way and the kids had to ask to go as it was out of the classroom. The preschools I chose had little bathrooms within the classrooms. Always remind your children to wash their hands after the toilet, before eating, after playing outside etc and it'll become habit. You could ask the staff about the toilet monitoring and hand washing, they're normally very good and see who is in and out the toilets and would likely call to the child to wash their hands if they don't automatically.

I'd go on the welcome you received and how you felt, if the kids looked happy and engaged, whether it felt warm and welcoming. Children do go to the toilet independently, I'm sure they're given help if they ask for it, and reminders to wash hands. If you were there talking to an adult who was in ratio I'd let that go.

To be honest if the nursery meets all the legal criteria I would just go on my gut feel. If you don’t like it and have other options then don’t choose it.

In the nursery I work in, we don't supervise them going to the loo, but the toilets are in the open plan classroom so we are aware if they don't flush and wash most of the time and can remind them. They always wash hands before food. In fact, the lure of the automatic taps and brightly coloured pump soap means they wash their hands very regularly!!!

The odd time I'm in the room at DC's nursery the sink area always reminds of the ladies room in the club. Lots of excited, animated chatter going on, if not much listening. Grin

YANBU because you can choose to not send to child to any childcare provider for any reason you like or that is important to you.

YABU for not being able to work this out for yourself.

I rejected a nursery on the basis that they only served fish finger/turkey dinosaur/smiley faces type meals but I didn't need to ask MN for advice on it.

Reject a nursery for any reason you like! Gut feel is enough! The mould is gross and would put me off but it’s normal for preschoolers to be independent for the loo.
