AIBU to say it’s the spider’s house now?

Massive spider crawling up my leg. Barely saw it as I am wearing black leggings. Reflexes kicked in and I brushed it off quickly, which flung it to the other sofa. It’s now somewhere in my lounge and I can’t find it and daren’t look for it. I know spiders are harmless but I cannot deal with them. DH is asleep as he has been working nights, so can’t help find it till the afternoon. AIBU to say it’s the spiders house now? Frantically searching Amazon for repellant spray… to make matters worse it was one of those huge ones with elbows and knees 🤮

We have this nonsense every year at his time. Grown women screaming over harmless little creatures.
To be clear, a small minority of people have a genuine phobia of spiders. That's awful, but it can be treated.
For the rest of us, let's grow up and not pretend we're frightened. And most of all, don't behave like that in front of children, or you will be teaching them to behave the same way.

Haha I scream when I see one moving but not because I'm scared of the little fella lol it's because I wasn't expecting it, I then say something like "you bloody idiot you made me jump then" it sounds weird but it's like I want the spider to know I'm not gonna hurt it and he can carry on 😂

Definitely spiders house now 🤣

newcatmam · 04/10/2024 14:38

I honestly don't mind spiders in my home now. I used to be so scared of them but as I've got older I've managed to overcome that. I will happily pick them up and put them outside, depending on their size, I wont pick a massive one up with my bare hands, that's when the glass and card comes out. Its mainly to save them as my cat loves to play with, and eat, spiders and flys and any bugs really.

Huge spider crawling across DS's pillow as I was tucking him into bed last night. 😭

Did you remove it or abandon him to the spider? Just asking because I'm not sure what I'd do...😮

bloodyspider · 04/10/2024 17:27

Update, DH found it when he woke up! Relieved!

I've been collecting conkers whenever I see them whilst walking the dog then placing them near doors and windows in every room. so far I haven't had any visits from monsters. Have no idea where this tip came from but will do anything to keep the biggest ones away.

I can generally deal with them by putting them in a jug and chucking them outside but occasionally a really big one in an awkward place gets killed in the Henry. My daughter is properly phobic - she can't even pick them up in a long handled spider collector tool as the handle touches the case they are in.

I think the reason is similar to the human reaction to catching sight of a tomato stalk beside them even if they're slicing the tomato they literally took said stalk off thirty seconds previously - they catch sight of a big conker body and think 'Fuck THAT'.

However, I suspect the most actually useful purpose of conkers where spiders are concerned is more likely to be lobbing them at the poor things.

My lovely Nana always used to say "they come in pairs you know..." 😮
Terrified us!😩

Swiftly removed. I had to pretend to remain calm and non-nonchalant so DS wouldn't freak out. Though I did then take all the bedding off, and look under every nook & cranny for other spiders, so not sure if DS bought it...

You're a better mother than me! I be shouting "night night!" from the doorway as I made a swift exit 😬
Was so glad when they got to an age where they remove their own spiders 😁

I remember one morning hearing the kind of squeal from my son’s room that made me know instantly it was a spider.

It was under his quilt when he woke up and when he moved the quilt it ran under his pillow. I found it all curled up trying to hide and yes, swiftly removed it!

Well it's already literally sat on you and you survived so 🤷‍♀️ what's the worst thing that can happen after that?

The spider hysteria on here is wild. Also just saw someone on instagram saying she used her crème brûlée torch to kill a spider carrying her babies on her back. Can't get my head round people setting fire to creatures and thinking it's ok.

Oh that’s awful 😢

Sologurn · 05/10/2024 10:14

I've been bracing myself for September hell, not allowing doors or windows open etc etc but am pleasantly surprised that non have invaded yet. Just jinxed myself there

How do you know what others feel, the extent of their fear etc? Who has a phobia and who is making it up?

Genuine question. I cannot fathom how you would know this.

KnittedCardi · 05/10/2024 11:23

Keep those windows closed ladies. Just walked down the garden and it's crawling with daddy long legs 😱

Potatoewithawonkyeye · 05/10/2024 12:59

We need to set up a Spider Tinder. We could make millions.

Spinder.

It would have to be one web though….

@GladAllOver We also have this nonsense every year of people who clearly making thoughtless comments as they clearly don't know what a phobia is

That's why I said that some people do have a genuine phobia. I have a relative who has a phobia of lifts and is terrified of going into one.

Fortunately there is life-changing treatment available for phobias and she is getting help for it.

I nearly stomped on my newborn baby because of this.

She was laying on her play mat as I was talking to DH and her big sister was telling us about Peppa pig.

And I saw this enormous spider nonchalantly scoot onto her chest and sit there.

My initial, sleep deprived state was to stop on this beast that was about to harm my daughter.

Luckily, DH intervened. Removed the spider (more like a tarantula) and scooped baby up.

I am phobic of spiders. But, I've worked on it to the extent that I don't mind the ones that eat the others. Currently have about 5 residing in the house. And I can calmly leave the room and get STBXDH to remove said spider. And the ones In the veluxs I've named and wre allowed to remain there.

However the bastard that bit me the other night was swiftly removed when aforementioned STBX saw on my bedroom door and declared it a false widow.
