Work asking me to do extra hours

I started my new job around a month ago and work keep asking me to do different/more hours because staff are off work etc. this isn’t in my contract. Is this a common thing? First job after a while due to having my DC and I’m a single parent.

Btw, I am only being given one day notice for the extra hours or change of hours

What field are you in? Some fields it's common, others not. If you can't/don't want to just tell them now to stop asking and if you want extra hours you'll ask for them. Set boundaries now and be firm or they'll walk all over you

HeddaGarbled · 03/10/2024 11:06

It’s fine for them to ask and it’s fine for you to say yes or no as you choose.

This and presumably you are being adequately remunerated if you agree?

This is superrr common in retail/hospitality (and I'm sure others!). Agree with pp just say you can't and you'll let them know if you can.

Viviennemary · 03/10/2024 11:10

Yes it's quite common. Especially as somebody else said in hospitality and retail. Just say sorry you can't manage extra hours at the moment.

Catza · 03/10/2024 12:42

Daily occurrence in caring and NHS jobs too. I simply say no. Yes, sometimes I used to get daily calls but they stop after about two weeks of firm "no" every time. I don't give an explanation either. Just "sorry, I won't be taking on this shift" is good enough.
Staff shortages is a management problem to solve.

Completely depends on the role and industry.

Are you full time, in which case it would be unusual?

However, if you are scheduled to do three shifts a week and they are asking for four shifts a week then Completely normal.

But Completely OK for you to say that you can't do it because of childcare

I agree it depends on the role and industry. Also - does your contract talk about this, and was it discussed in any way before starting?
