To think managers appraisals should take their staffs opinions into account

Just that really. I’ve had so many poor managers that get great appraisals and bonuses but have really unhappy staff working for them. Or even a really high staff turn over. Why is this not taken into consideration?
I do know the answer really, it’s simply down to money, and the fact that low paid staff are easily replaceable, but it frustrates the hell out of me.

In my experience any good performance management process does take this is as a data point to be able to fully assess competence as a manager - but that is experience from the corporate world as opposed to for example retail or hospitality

I know a lot of places where appraisals are two way each time they take place. They tend to be more corporate environments in my experience.

Decent places do, whether it be informal feedback or a formal 360º feedback process

Any decent employer will take that into account. For example staff survey results feeding directly into appraisals
