Luggage shops past airport security

At the airport. Found a seat by a luggage shop. Why would anyone buy a suitcase or bag past security?

To put all their purchases in from duty free

There must be a number of people that do, because there’s been a store selling luggage in almost every airport I’ve travelled through in the last 20-30 years.

If there was no demand, they’d stock some other (usually overpriced) commodity in the space instead.

I always used to wonder this too, especially since they sell all sizes including ones that could only ever be checked luggage and not carry on.

Thinking about it logically though, I'm guessing their main sales must come from selling smaller bags/carry on cases etc. then try to upsell people to buy the whole set and have the other case(s) either delivered to their home address or collect upon return.

Because it's when you pack then travel to the airport that you realise how bad your luggage is. Because the rest of the year you don't think about it.

What about watches? I mean, if you’re wandering around in duty-free you are presumably already on time for the flight. 😉

I actually asked this question in a luggage store once and was told, that they aren’t expecting people to buy them, but to see one they like and order after. I guess ‘window shop’.

I imagine Antler, Samsonite etc are almost like concessions in the store. I didn’t ask that question!

the one before security are usually for overweight luggage. My colleague was going to be chatted £75 for her case being too heavy she asked how much an extra case would be and it wax £35 so she just bought a cheap one at the luggage shop and checked it in.

Oops sorry this is a zombie I never noticed!

I once bought a hand-held electronic game at an airport. A screwdriver was needed to install the batteries. Of course, screwdrivers were nowhere to be had after security, so it was no use during the flight.

If you ever get on a flight in Dubai or Doha to some of the dodgier parts of Africa you'll see that people do buy large suitcases after security and (more to the point) check in. They fill them with designer clothes, handbags, electronics and so on which they also buy in the airport shops and wheel them to the gate, then expect the ground staff to deal with it after they try and fail to take it in the cabin.
