I'm looking to buy not while they are on sale, but how do I work out what I need? I'm definitely leaning towards the one with a mount, but then I need to add a chime as it won't be hardwired?

What have you got? any suggestions welcome

Mine rings onto my Alexa dot. Wasn't going to waste money on a chime.

Just want to jump on and say thank you to those people mentioning Eufy. I've been after a video doorbell for a while but was put off Ring because of the subscription.

Ours is unwired, the battery does not last 2 years in the slightest. Buy a spare battery charge it and swap it when the other one runs out we get app notifications when the battery is running down
We also bought the chime because otherwise you have to be near your phone if someone rings the bell, we didn't need it because the dogs let us know if someone is at the door anyway.

We also have the subscription, I can't remember what it does but there's a reason we decided to pay for it!

Subscription is for access to old videos, for looking back to see who approached/ rang your door. I think ....

Oh wow thank you all for your replies! Really helpful stuff here. I'm going to look into the Eufy one as well, but if I do go ring I will definitely get the extra battery pack!!

I've got the blink system consisting of:
A doorbell that rings on my phone or can be hardwired
Three external battery powered cameras.
One floodlight driveway camera and light.
One internal usb camera used as a cat cam!
One internal camera plugged in but in the overhang of the porch so it's dry.

The system costs me £8 a month for all those cameras. I think you can have up to eight on the one synch module (comes in the multipack kit) that you plug in and use over your WiFi to enable the system. You can buy more synch modules and cameras too so you could do a whole mansion if needs be.

We have an unwired ring plus the chimes in a couple of rooms and a spare battery - so there is always a charged battery to replace. And the app on all the adults' phones. Works well for us. It is sometimes handy to be able to "answer the door" when you aren't actually in the house. But, tbh, I can't say we really get much other benefit out of it - it's mostly just a fancy doorbell.

Hi
The battery life will depend on the settings e.g. you can have it so it'll only go off if someone presses it; or you can have movement detection.
Movement detection does seem to drain it a lot faster.
Like others I bought a spare battery so when one goes flat I can switch over while it charges.

You don't need a subscription if you're not bothered about keeping the footage

We have a few ring accessories so pay £8 pm which covers all of them; if you just want the doorbell it's £4.99 pm.

I don't have a chime with ours as it goes off on our Alexa and phones.

Yes, I keep detection on all tne time, as it then videos anyone who approaches, but I have alerts switched off. It only alerts when pressed. And if someone approaches it gives a little tinkle on my phone. I’d say the battery needs charging every couple of months, but I usually charge at about 50 percent as it’s quicker to recharge that way.

we are not close to the street, you need to be on the long drive for it to capture you, and I have it closed off so it doesn’t capture past this, I think thr more it picks up the quicker it drains the battery.

Tulips543 · 03/10/2024 10:55

We've got a Eufy which alerts on our phone - wenget the alert even if someone knocks on the door imstead. Had it 2 years now and no issues. Not wired in so do need to charge battery but it lasts ages and charges up quickly. No extra costs like Ring and video quality is good. Has been very useful to challenge claims that delivery of shopping was attempted but no one in (Asda twice!) as could just forward the timed footage proving this was not the case.

JBJ · 03/10/2024 11:08

I've got a very old Ring wireless (no removable battery). Charge lasts about 2-3 months, but this is dependent on settings etc. I didn't but the chime as I have Alexa devices all over the house, however, it has recently stopped alerting on any of the Alexas, yet is still working on my (always on silent) phone. Ring tell me the issue is with Alexa. Amazon tell me the issue is with Ring! I think k I'm going to replace it, but tempted by the Eufy as there's no subscription.

Tel12 · 03/10/2024 11:11

Mines battery operated, bought 2 so that I can replace straight away and recharge. The chime is a plug in the hall, plus the phone of course.

I was looking at the one with the no drill mount, which is battery but doesn't seem to be 'changeable' battery - would I have to take the whole thing off to charge it regularly?

Just make sure you have Wi-Fi coverage where you're going to place the bell

Yes it just pops off. More awkward if you use the little screws to screw it in, I don’t bother. But it’s private enough here no one is going to try and nick it. Plus, you know, they are being filmed. The charging cable just goes in the back.

Yes. You just need to poke a pin thing in a little hole at the base and the whole thing pops off the backing case and you can charge it via USB overnight.
Have never felt the need for a 2nd battery.
Mine is attached by a couple of screws on the backing plate.
