Christmas Gift?

What do you think.......Is it mean to upgrade DD's phone as a Christmas gift for her? Contract ending next month!

DH thinks it's a great idea but he's tight as!

I don't think it's mean, no? It's a fine present in my opinion but maybe a few small things to unwrap as well.

How old is she?

Mycatisashit · 02/10/2024 23:09

How old is she? Does she want or need a new phone?

My DC get new ones for Xmas when their contracts finish. It’s a great gift.

TequilaMockingburd · 02/10/2024 23:29

She is 15 and although doesn't exactly need one- she would definitely like the upgrade. Ah thanks for your views... much appreciated!

My GD is 15 and very happy to get an upgrade for Xmas, birthday

slipperypenguin · 02/10/2024 23:31

Definitely normal

StormingNorman · 02/10/2024 23:34

Can the upgrade wait so she can open the phone at Christmas?

Blinkii · 02/10/2024 23:37

What's tight about giving someone an expensive brand new phone for Christmas?

Emiline · 02/10/2024 23:38

I think it’s mean, surely a phone contract is a normal thing to have outwith birthdays or Christmas time if you can afford it. We never counted the latest phone or data plan as presents but everyone’s financial circumstances are different.

Enough4me · 02/10/2024 23:40

I bet she'd love it, along with a stocking with things she likes makeup/mini perfume/Chocs. Maybe some new pajamas and bedding set.

hattie43 · 02/10/2024 23:55

It's a weird present imo. A phone is a normal expense like any other bill and I presume you wouldn't gift an electric upgrade or boiler repair insurance on your gas contract .

AnneButNotHathaway · 03/10/2024 13:27

I think it's a great idea, not mean at all!

Dishwashersaurous · 03/10/2024 13:35

Completely normal.

A brand new shiny phone to unwrap on Christmas day is a perfect present for a teen

A phone might be a normal expense but the latest iPhone when you don’t need a new phone is a luxury. I bet there are a gazillion teenagers asking for the latest phone for Christmas. I doubt any teenager in the history of mankind has ever asked for a new boiler for Christmas 😂

No one would think it was mean if OP said she was popping into the Apple store to buy an iPhone as a gift for her DD. Why is spreading the payments through a contract any different?

What have you done in the past for your DD or other DC? If you normally upgrade their phones at the end of the contract, then it is a bit mean.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/10/2024 13:47

DS got a new iPhone for Christmas last year - he was delighted! There was nothing wrong with the one he had, it was just a few years old, so having the latest version was a treat, and that’s what Christmas presents should be imo.

I8toys · 03/10/2024 14:01

We've upgraded our two boys phones 18 and 21 and they are getting them at Christmas. They are £1,000 plus. They will also get other smaller gifts but that is their main present. And a good one at that.

Underlig · 03/10/2024 14:03

Normal as a Christmas gift.

Seashellssanctuary · 03/10/2024 16:04

Generally keeping an old phone enables you to reduce the monthly cost. With this in mind an upgrade is a perfectly fair present in my mind and something that my 13yr old son would be very happy with
