That the weather is dramatically affecting my mood

It's been raining solidly for what seems like a couple of weeks except for last Saturday. If it's not raining it's grey. I feel so down so despondent like my mood is matching the grey sky and I can feel it pressing into my head. My dds birthday is around now and it's always been a lovely few weeks - she's often had a bouncy castle! And I'd still be wearing summery clothes and we would be in the garden . I'm just so depressed about the weather which is pointless I know. I'm remembering last winter and the never ending rain and greyness. I'm thinking of being in France in the summer and beautiful summer light. Anyone else struggling. What do you do to counteract it. And don't say hot chocolate cos I hate it lol!!

I agree ! I normally adore Autumn, but the grey skies and constant rain are really getting to me this year .

BabyR · 02/10/2024 15:35

The weather affects my mood too. It’s the rain and wind that bothers me, I don’t mind the dark nights so much as by that point I’ve had enough of the day and I’m ready to switch off 😂

Abra1t · 02/10/2024 15:48

I can usually keep my spirits up until half-term in October or when the clocks go back, keeping in mind that it's actually only five months of GMT and seven of BST. This year, it feels as if it has never been sunny for more than a few days at a time. I have felt very snappy and fed up this week and I'm sure it's because I feel deprived of the sun.

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/10/2024 15:52

It’s not so much the change of the seasons, although I mourn the loss of summer ( not that there was much of it this year), but it’s the relentless greyness of the weather and the incessant wind, which has been an unwelcome feature all year.

I enjoy the days lengthening in spring and long days and short nights in summer, but winter has nothing to recommend it at all, as far as I’m concerned.

YANBU. The weather this year has been relentlessly shit - endless, endless rain, overcast and grey, virtually no summer whatsoever apart from the odd few days here and there, and now we’re plunging back into dark, short days, and it’s cold, wet and windy again with no prospect of any improvement for at least 5 months.

I never mind battening down the hatches in the autumn if we’ve had a good few months of lovely, sunny weather, and I usually look forward to cosy nights, lighting the fire and getting ready for Christmas, but right now my heart just isn’t in it. I feel bloody robbed and I’m not ready for this non-event of a year to be over already when it feels like it never even got started! It’s depressing, and quite a few people I know are feeling the same - we just don’t seem to have proper seasons anymore and it makes the whole year feel flat.

DH and I are now dead set on moving overseas in the near future. I wasn’t 100% convinced before, but this summer has tipped me over the edge. I’m not prepared to sit freezing my arse off and looking at grey drizzle 10 months of the year until I die. Although I realise ‘leave the country’ is not quite as practical a suggestion as ‘treat yourself to a hot chocolate’ 😂.

I agree with a lot of this. I used to love autumn/winter but now I really struggle because of the lack of seasons. Although I won’t be moving overseas with you and your DH, unless you’d like me to! Grin

Agree with loads of the these posts about it being a mind set about trying to on the positives from each seasons - I like food as it's seasonal.

However do think the weather has changing in the fact it rains most days but rarely all day. I think that getting out of the house is vital and I constantly check BBC weather for when looks good. During the week I have three slots - before 9am, between 12-2pm and after 5pm. During these times I make sure i go for a nice walk, go out for a treat, garden or run errand when its not raining, once a day at a minimum and this massively beats the winter blues. At the weekend I try to be productive in or out the house, when I get up, then get out of the house as soon as its decent.

It's really pleasing beating the rain and knowing you've made the most of good and bad weather. Good luck op sad can be crippling

Comedycook · 02/10/2024 16:05

I agree there's no real seasons anymore. It's kind of mild, grey and drizzly all year round

More the merrier as far as I’m concerned, @CitrusPocket!

God damn! I've exhausted the autumnal love of cinnamon stick candles and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. I've tried. I've given it my all for years. But seriously, I saw mince pies the other day and I had homicidal thoughts. It's someone's job to promote this shit before autumn even starts. And that someone needs mince pies ramming down his throat in September for daring to conjure any Wintery fucking Hygge-type shit this early. And yeah, fuck hygge. That died years ago. Didn't work. We tried to pretend for a couple of years that we too were a Scandi Kultur. What a farce. Nobody talks about hygge anymore do they?
OP, I HATE HATE HATE this weather.

But I feel better for getting that off my chest. 😁

This rant is very on brand with your user name. "Serenity Now!" is often exclaimed in our house.

I’m feeling it worse than usual too this year due to the relentless rain all year but I do have actual SAD. We have a thread going on the mental health board if anyone wants to join? Hot chocolate, blankets, cosy and snuggling are banned words!

Festering under a blanket, mainlining sugar for 9 months of the year is no good for anyone!

It’s funny (actually it’s not funny) that you’ve had, “it’s October, what do you expect?” already. I also read it’s only March, April, May and even June on here earlier this year. What I expect (well need) is more than 2 months of vaguely sunny weather and 10 months of misery!!

I agree. September is normally nice and sunny. Often more so than August. So we didn’t get that this year.

Summer was just inconsistent- yes there were the odd sunny, warm days but often on a Monday when I was at work, never seemingly on a Saturday/Sunday or when anyone was having an outdoor party or BBQ.

Last year was wet and we had so much flooding here right through Spring. I’m just not ready for what will likely be a good 7-8 months of damp and rain.

When my kids leave home I will move somewhere warm and sunny, or at least decamp somewhere from
Oct-June (though our summers are shit so not sure why I’d come back then).

This year is going to be hard for those of us that struggle with the relentless cold and dark.

I feel the same. September is usually fairly sunny. I got married at the beginning of October (years ago) and it's been sunny 9/10 anniversaries. Going into winter after a very grey autumn is really hard.

Well I'm sure trudging round the shops spending money you don't have on gifts for people who will most likely not appreciate them is more fun in the sunshine

Yes, although we also have online shopping, along with Christmas and nice weather.
