To think colours should come with a blow dry?

NC but been around for donkeys years.

AIBU or is my hair salon? I booked online last night for a "full head hair colour" (£60), it states on the booking slot online this particular service is 1 hour 30 minutes.

I arrive this morning, and was asked if I want to go dark all over, as that's all there's time for. I was a little confused, that the only colour I can choose, is dark brown all over. What if someone blonde went in, or auburn, etc. Does everyone who books in for a full head of colour have one colour choice to choose?

I have medium brown roots and a light balayage on the ends, that I paid for at the same salon in feb. I will attach a picture of what colour I wanted to go, but I hadn't even mentioned this or shown a picture, so the stylist didn't know this to predict their wouldn't be enough time to do the colour of my choice, as soon as I walked in and she said dark brown or nothing.

I said I didn't want to go dark brown all over, so she suggested a toner to brighten up the balayage. I told her I thought it was quite brassy last time so didn't like it. I agreed to the toner as I had just traveled there for nothing otherwise. Whilst I had the toner on, I was informed I didn't add on a cut or blow dry to the booking system, so I wouldn't be able to have my hair dried. I said I didn't realise, also we were less than an hour in to my apt, and the booking system said it would be 1hr 30, so how couldn't there be time to trim and dry it?

After they washed off the toner, they asked the appreciate/ Juniour to blast it dry, no blow drying style was used, she literally just blasted it how I would at home, it was all frizzy and static/ bushy looking. The colour also looked exactly the same, and the toner had made no difference.

I spoke to the manager, who said she used the same toner as last time (not sure why, when I said last time I found it brassy, which is why I wanted to change the colour today) and the manager seemed pissed off/ unhelpful. Told me if I wanted anything further/ a cut I would have to sit and wait half an hour or so.

i left feeling quite disappointed and was charged £70, for the hair to be left all frizzy and blasted dry by the Juniour, not blow dried properly by one of the stylists, I feel like I've been ripped off charging full price for that blow dry. And the toner that made 0 difference. My mum and partner have asked me what I had done as my hair looks exactly the same as before I went in. AIBU to feel like they've taken the piss? My usual stylist who did the toner, was also colouring another ladies hair at the same time too. Pic of the colour i originally booked in to go attached below.

5/6 years ago you never paid more for a blow dry after a full colour!

Its a post covid thing and so cheeky imo, you can’t even see the work properly if it hasn’t been dried and smoothed.

It's not. My last salon job ended in 2015 and they were doing it then and for many years before and after. Some salons may well do a blow dry at no extra charge but this is because the cost is already included in the price. It's a bit like buying something with free shipping. We know shipping is not free, the total price is inflated to accommodate for "free shipping"

doodleschnoodle · 02/10/2024 17:06

No fancy Mayfair salons here, but I pay £70 for colour (this is usually just 3/4-head highlights), cut and blow dry. I've never specified the blow dry part, it's just automatically done. I think it's a bit weird not to include it but I'm not really a 'hair' person so maybe that's normal elsewhere.

TiramisuThief · 02/10/2024 17:09

I would expect a proper blow dry to be included but tbh £60 is insanely cheap so I think you could have twigged if you'd thought about it.

olympicsrock · 02/10/2024 17:19

I always pay extra for the blow dry. I often choose not to have the blow dry and enjoy my cut or colour being cheaper as a result

That makes sense, but to me the blow-dry is part of the whole service so I pay whatever the cost is incl. it.
I'm in Ireland so I have never seen it priced separately... interested to hear if anyone else has in Dublin.

Genuine question please @catza; is that also the case for haircut? How do you judge its been properly/ evenly cut if it's not blowdried?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/10/2024 17:24

My salon doesn't do wet cuts and they'd want to see how the colour developed properly and most of all they'd want the customer to be happy with the results so they'd definitely include a blow dry, this sounds awful OP, vote with your feet and go elsewhere.

At my hairdressers, you pick the finish you want. A blast dry is free, and a blow dry is about £30. Years ago it used to be included, but not anymore

Same. I had a cut last week and was asked did I want it drying off, or a blow dry. I had the blow dry because for me it’s a big deal to look fab for 48 hours.

pizzaHeart · 02/10/2024 17:36

I usually tell my hairdresser one of 2 options: colour or just cut.
with just cut I get : washing hair, cut, blow drying properly with a bit of straightening and hairspray applied.
when I tell her that I will come for colour: I have all of the above plus 2 colours and some bleached strands.
they are CFs

No, I did say to the manager i wasn't happy and my hair didn't look how it usually looks/ it looks no different to how I walked in but didn't get much of a response. He just said I should have toned it darker then, and the stylist used the same toner as I had last time (despite me saying i didn't like the last one it was brassy) and wasn't shown a choice of toning colours, she just said she would brighten it up, but it doesn't look any different.
They did go in to the back where they mix up the colours and whisper, so I felt uncomfortable and paid and left. But I do feel I've been ripped off a little, and was wondering whether to write a bad review, which is why I asked on here if IABU, as I'm happy to write it off if I am.

100% write a bad review. I would want to be warned before paying out good money to go to a hair dresser that was going to do a poor job. And the way that they handled it shows that they most definitely deserved it.

queenofthewild · 02/10/2024 17:40

I'd give that salon a swerve in the future.

Reputable salons require a patch test 48h before your appointment to ensure you don't have a reaction to the ingredients in the dye. You would discuss and select your colour at that appointment. Without a patch test they are not insured if anything goes wrong.

The cut comes with a blow dry because it is actually essential for the cut ( the hairdresser will often adjust the cut after the blow dry). And also it is not a separate appointment. Whereas a blow dry is an additional 45 min slot to colour so it costs money to the salon/hairdresser.
There are some salons that offer “dry cut” and “wet cut”. More of a budget option I don’t bother with, personally. I don’t think one can cut hair properly that way but, again, there is a target market for these.

Thank you. As I would expect for cutting.

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 02/10/2024 18:25

The salon I go to have separate colourists and stylists, so if you want a colour and blow dry, you have to book with separate people. If you just want your hair dried after a colour, a junior will rough dry it for you. That said, I usually book a colour and cut at the same time. A blow dry is always included with the latter.

Tbh, I've never been to a salon where the same person does the colour and cut/styling.

Yeah and I think the move to online booking systems conveniently encourages Ryan(h)air-style charging for every last thing (Want a seat? That'll be extra. Inside the plane? That'll be extra etc)

cstaff · 07/10/2024 10:15

I was getting my hair done in Dublin on Friday and was telling my hairdresser about this conversation and she was horrified. especially when I mentioned that they were charging full price for a blow-dry after having your hair cut or coloured etc so hopefully we are safe from this BS in Ireland for a while.

And just for reference I had my hair cut, coloured and blowdry for €75.

Smartiepants79 · 07/10/2024 10:24

I think that this was partly your own fault. And partly them being a bit grumpy and unhelpful.
You DID want it dark brown all over so I’m not quite sure why you didn’t just agree to that.
If you’ve had your hair coloured there before then I’m not quite sure why you didn’t know to book a cut and blow dry on top of the colour. It’s fairly standard practice in many salons.
They don’t sound particularly helpful though so maybe time to find a new place.
