Am I being unreasonable for worrying so much about this?

TW: Brain Tumour - Child.

I’m really worried my child has a brain tumour..

She has:

  • 1 eye that’s more ‘bulbous’ than the other, she’s had this for 5 years, I have the same
  • she has to go to have her eyes dilated at the opticians as they think she needs glasses ( this is what triggered my anxiety, why do they need to look behind her eye )
  • she’s a bit clumsy and has grazes on her knees ( she’s 5 )

She’s never;
❌complained of a headache
❌ felt dizzy ( unless she’s spun herself )
❌ thrown up
❌ extremely sleepy, she’s actually very energetic.

My anxiety might seem crazy and unclear to some, but it’s making me loose my sleep!

They always look behind the eye at eye tests. Please don't worry, they are checking for anything that might be causing the need for glasses that is fixable and the general health of the eye.

Yes. Don't worry. It's unresonable to jump to that conclusion.

I think you are panicking over nothing.

She is probably clumsy because she needs glasses. Checking the actual eye health is standard during an eye text so dont worry.

I honestly think you might need to talk to the GP about your anxiety. This is not a normal thing to lose sleep over considering the "symptoms".

The bulbous eye - do you have a brain tumour? If not, why would that lead you to think that your daughter has one?

my daughter at 18 months was clumsey.. she rad books upside down.. she was sent for eye tests and she's been wearing glasses ever since..

they need to look inside the eye to make sure there is nothing more serious going on, but it really sounds to me like your DD just needs glasses.

try not to worry

If anyone was suspecting a brain tumor, I am fairly certain they would be sending her for an MRI, not to an optician. They can't "see" the entire brain through the eye, they can only see retina, blood vessels and part of an optic nerve. It feels like it would have been the first thing to google over a brain tumor symptoms, to be honest. Although I appreciate we don't always think straight when it comes to our kids.

I second the advice to speak to the GP about your anxiety.

As other posters have said looking at the back of the eye is just part of a normal eye test. They are checking the health of the internal structure and it's also great for picking up the early changes before a condition starts fully.

If they suspect a brain tumour your daughter would be sent for an MRI. Id also expect there to be migraines or nausea and not just clumsy. Some people naturally have one eye that looks more bulging than another, during the eye exam, ask the optician about pressure levels in her eyes. If they are both normal then I wouldn't be worried.

Yea this, I’m afraid. I was in A&E one night with son2, he would have been about 7 and they wanted to test him for a “brain infection”. I laughed and said “he doesn’t have a brain infection”. They tested him anyway (he didn’t)
