TV chimney breast

AIBU to consider hanging my tv on the chimney breast? My mum says it's chavy 😐. I think it's practical. What does MN think?

Yeah, it’s very tacky. Also, surely, the wrong height for TV viewing.

Prisonpillow · 02/10/2024 13:18

Have you got an alcove beside it? Previously I’ve had one on a pull out arm that goes flat into the alcove.

But if it’s the most practical place and where you want it - just do it.

PuzzleMix · 02/10/2024 13:19

I wouldn't but it's your house!

DogInATent · 02/10/2024 13:19

Depends on the height, depends whether you have a fire in the hearth or not.

DogInATent · 02/10/2024 13:22

De-rusting the memory banks from bank when I worked in the electricals department of a store as a young student... the best height for a tv is where the viewers eyelevel is about a third down from the top of the screen, and the best distance for viewing is at least 3x the screen diagonal.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/10/2024 13:25

I hate watching a TV stuck up on the wall, chimney breast or not. Just put it in the recess at the side......unless it's massive and doesn't fit, which would be chavvy no matter where it goes.

Gr8bolsoffyre · 02/10/2024 13:26

It’s very practical for us in terms of space and I couldn’t care less if it’s chavvy. Which is a bloody horrible term.

We don’t have a working fire though. I guess if you had one of those or a log burner then it might not work?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/10/2024 13:26

Most wall mounted TVs are too high in my opinion.

I regard the correct height to view a TV to be similar to a painting, which is the centre of the picture being at eye level. So measure that from your seated position.

Also don't put your TV over a heating source.

Dotjones · 02/10/2024 13:27

Usually hanging it on the chimney breast means hanging it far too high. You shouldn't have to look up to view a TV.

EngineEngineNumber9 · 02/10/2024 13:29

I think above a fireplace is too high. Our TV is mounted on the wall with a bracket but it’s the same height as it would be if sitting on a cabinet if that makes sense.

WhereIsMyLight · 02/10/2024 13:31

Ours is above the fire (we don’t have a chimney) and it is too high. However, we will be putting a media wall in at some point and still hanging the TV over the fire but it’ll be a smaller fire and lower so the TV will be lower. Whilst the TV is at the wrong height at the minute it’s not an option to put it on a TV stand as we’ve got a dog and his waggy tail would definitely catch it.

Afterrain · 02/10/2024 13:34

I have always wondered if it was safe to do so.

Do you have some sort of heating source in the hearth? Or other heating source that uses the flue? Some modern houses just have the illusion of a chimney.

It is your home and as long as it is safe you can decorate as you wish.

SunnyHedgehog · 02/10/2024 13:36

We're short on space so it's the only place really for it to go, couldn't care less if it's chavvy, it's just what works for you

Peridot1 · 02/10/2024 13:41

We are about to do it. I’m not keen to be honest. I do think it’s a bit tacky really. But it’s in a room that is primarily used by DS for watching tv. And it’s an awkward shaped room to position furniture and this makes most sense. So I have been persuaded by DH, DS and our builder.

So my compromise is that it goes over the fireplace as low as we can get it. We are taking out the log burner (which we haven’t used in the four years we have been in this house) and replacing it with an electric stove that looks the same but can be on very low.

And we are going for one of the Samsun Frame TVs that looks like a painting when it’s not on.

We always have quite high backed sofas as that’s all that DH likes so I’ve sat on the sofa looking at the piece of cardboard we positioned where the tv will go and it’s not too bad. I could just lean back a little against the top of the cushion.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 02/10/2024 13:45

Might be chavvy but it's the only decent wall option in this house so it's on there. Same as it is on most of the houses on this street.

KimberleyClark · 02/10/2024 13:47

I wouldn’t. TVs look better on stands imo.

Lolypoly14 · 02/10/2024 14:02

I don’t think it’s tacky or chavvy, I wouldn’t care if it was, but it is too high.

We stayed in a holiday cottage with a TV over the fireplace and I found it too uncomfortable to watch.

TennisLady · 02/10/2024 14:09

I personally hate wall mounted TVs, I hate having to look up to watch TV. Much prefer it to the side in an alcove on a TV stand.

lololulu · 02/10/2024 14:11

What this is weird.

We don't have a chimney breast or fireplace but our tv is on the wall. I thought most were?

GreyRooted · 02/10/2024 14:12

We had it built in. I’m far from chavvy. Oh, and our room is also grey, which is another no no according to mumsnet! Where ours is not to high.

Whereoneartharewe · 02/10/2024 15:35

I don't like wall mounted tv's either. Very uncomfortable to watch and they dominate the room and become the most important thing in it.
Having said that I'm not a great tv fan anyway and prefer smallish screens to the absolutely mammoth ones a lot of people seem to have.

SailsUp · 02/10/2024 15:36

That looks great @GreyRooted I am also considering painting the room grey.

I don’t have any issues. Nor am I chavvy.
