DP's shirt armpits become white and stiff with antiperspirant.

The shirts are too good for the bin. Surely there is some chemical that will just dissolve the stuff?

AIBU to ask Mumsnetters the best way to solve this problem?

Never had this problem. I think it's the deodorant he's using. Will he change it?

Wbite vinegar before washing

vincettenoir · 02/10/2024 08:24

Watching with interest. DH has the same problem. We are binning them atm which I’m not comfortable with.

ReadWithScepticism · 02/10/2024 08:24

I read the other day that white residue in clothes that have been sweat stained is the result of having a high levels of electrolytes. Does he use electrolyte supplements, or eat a lot of salt?

Motomum23 · 02/10/2024 08:25

Dr beckman sells a deodorant and sweat stain remover.

dottyp0104 · 02/10/2024 08:27

I've managed to save white school shirts with combination of fairy washing liquid then Dr Beckman stain devil Deo and sweat stain remover. Put the stain devil on then leave for 10 mins then put on a hot wash.

Over40Overdating · 02/10/2024 08:27

Soaking in white vinegar, then a hot wash with a bio detergent to break down trapped body matter. He may need to look at how much anti perspirant he uses - it can be a vicious cycle of using more to counteract any trapped smell in the clothes which causes more buildup which causes more smell which needs more deodorant.

GreatNorthBun · 02/10/2024 08:29

Deo Go, and if you don't already, use biological washing powder.

DisorganisedMummyTurningOrgnaised · 02/10/2024 08:29

I used a barcarb soda and water paste - let it sit a few hours, comes right off!

RampantIvy · 02/10/2024 08:30

Following with interest. Adding the Dr Beckman to my shopping list.

I have tried white vinegar but it doesn't work.

GrouachMacbeth · 02/10/2024 08:30

Could he wear white t-shirts to absorb the perspiration. Does he need to trim armpit hair?

Cocorico22 · 02/10/2024 08:31

soak the affected parts in limescale remover (some deos and antiperspirants contain waxy ingredients that are dissolved by the acid, this can be what causes the build up of residue)

triple dry leaves less residue than other products in my experience

alternatively, underarm Botox massively reduces need to use antiperspirants. The cost (£500 once a year) would be less than continually buying nice shirts!

MyNameIsBatty · 02/10/2024 08:32

No solution but following as DHs shirts are the same and even a hotter wash doesn't seem to shift it. I suspect the deodorant has 'set' and there may be no hope!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 02/10/2024 08:34

A good soak with bicarbonate of soda and white finger. I also add in some vanish stain remover. Give it a good scrub then A hot wash.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 02/10/2024 08:35

Vinegar not finger. Autocorrect is killing me

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 02/10/2024 08:41

Mildly interested by this as I have never seen it, and that is certainly not because we are magical non-sweating angels. I’m curious as to why.

For what it’s worth: we use Ariel professional bio powder plus Vanish powder as needed; never use fabric conditioner; typically wash on 40.

mikado1 · 02/10/2024 08:44

It's the sweat/deodorant combo according to Gaff Goddess, who I find v good. A spray of vinegar pre wash is her advice and probably a soak as pp says if it's there already. I also put a cup of vinegar into softener drawer for every white wash.

LikeABat · 02/10/2024 08:47

Another vote for Dr Beckman. May need a few goes if very ingrained.

TeaOrCoffeeOrHotChocolate · 02/10/2024 08:48

My husband gets this on his work polo shirts. They're not white but navy blue and the armpits just feel hard and crusty but aren't white. I tried the doctor beckmans stuff but it made no difference

I’d agree this works really well

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 02/10/2024 09:00

Good grief what are they putting in this deodorant and what harm is it doing his skin? best look for an alternative.

DD sweats excessively. The milder antiperspirants are simply not an option. She has lots of allergies so I'm not convinced that botox injections are a good idea either.

I'm going to try the bicarbonate of soda and water trick.

It's usually people who use non bio. That's why enzyme cleaners work to fix it.

grumpypedestrian · 02/10/2024 18:12

When people say binning them do you mean adding to landfill?

Our local recycling centre takes used textiles for recycling, please do this instead.

BashfulClam · 02/10/2024 18:13

Capful of zoflora in the drawer. Dunno why but it works!

Clothes and skin are not the same. There's no indication this is doing anything bad to his skin.
