To ask if your vertigo gets worse when weather turns cold?

Hi - I started getting vertigo about 6 years ago - early 40’s. The first time was the worst - I really didn’t know what was happening - I started thinking I was having a stroke it was so bad. Since then it comes and goes - but I see to be totally free of vertigo every summer.
dreading the cold nights coming in now.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Opposite for me, Its worse now in warmer weather for me!

No mine is random. It usually comes on overnight I think I must roll over too quickly in my sleep.

I have had this for about 8 years but thankfully not had an attack for about 12 months.

My best friend's mum also has it and she is convinced it's worse about 4 times a year in the changing of the seasons. She's adamant that it's that for her, though I appreciate its different for everyone.

Flying, stress and having a blocked nose/sinuses makes mine flare up. Do you get colds at this time of year that might make it worse?

HeliotropePJs · 01/10/2024 23:44

I've had vertigo from time to time since my early 40s, as well. Never linked it to any particular time of year, so far, though it does seem to happen most first thing in the morning. Like you, OP, when it first happened I was terrified that there was something seriously wrong with me. It was such a relief to learn that it was only vertigo, and mine has been easy to clear up.

On the off chance that this helps someone, take a look at information about benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). It's caused by crystals in your inner ear canals getting out of whack/in the wrong position. That's what has caused my bouts of vertigo, and doing a specific set of movements has helped reduce the symptoms. Look up the Epley manoeuvre. (And my sympathies to those who have trickier cases that can't be so easily remedied.)

Thank you all for your responses- it is interesting the variation between them. The changing of the seasons is an interesting one - I used to get migraines - often seemed to be triggered by quick change in temp from hot to cold and vice versa.
I will definitely look up the epley procedure.

Mine is worse in winter. I read something about it being linked to vitamin D levels and a Dr. recommended varying the times and amounts of vit d tablets during the day.

Yes I get BPPV every now and then and have definitely noticed it happening especially when it's very cold. The first time it happened years ago was in a cold spell too.
