Will this fishcake make me ill?

Unopened cod fishcake (raw uncooked fish) from M&S has been in the fridge and use by date says 27 September. I opened it and it doesn't smell and looks ok. Should I bin it or cook it?

YANBU - eat it
YABU - bin it

Fish three days past the use by date isn’t worth the risk.

Neveranynamesleft · 01/10/2024 22:46

Personally I would bin it....

KnickerlessParsons · 01/10/2024 22:46

I'd give it a go.

NinetyNineOrangeBalloons · 01/10/2024 22:47

I ignore use by dates on a lot of things, but wouldn’t take a chance on fish that’s 4 days past the date

Livinginaclock · 01/10/2024 22:48

I'd eat it.

doodlydooo · 01/10/2024 22:48

Ach, just stuck it in the oven as well. Was more hopeful for positive responses. Will chuck it.

I personally wouldn't. When it's fish mixed with other ingredients it's much more likely to be a risk, as the bacteria will be potentially covering each small piece of the fish/filling. In fact fish in general it's not worth the risk if it's a day over.
Next time just freeze one of them when you buy it.

But I hope you've something else? I love a jacket potato with cheese when there's not much else in. Or just get a takeaway if money isn't an issue. But I wouldn't risk the fishcake.

triballeader · 01/10/2024 22:54

PLEASE proceed to the bin.

It is a use by date for a reason. More so for anyone who falls within at risk groups from food contamination.
Truly not worth finding out the hard way why fish is considered a very high risk food in food hygiene training.

If food has a best before date it means just that it’s at its best before the date and starts to go stale and sad over a time period after. think biscuits that get soft or chocolates white sheen. abets before date you can choose to eat the food after but do not expect it to be as good as it would have been before its best before date.)

doodlydooo · 01/10/2024 23:27

Was about to chuck it but DH ate it.. he said it tasted fine.

OP posts:
TangerinePlate · 01/10/2024 23:55

Might have tested fine however some toxins are not detectable by taste.
Fish/seafood poisonings are one of the worst ones. For the sake of a fee quid I wouldn’t risk days of (pun intended) gut wrenching misery

rainbowbee · 02/10/2024 00:21

I normally think best before dates are for morons, but I wouldn't chance a fishcake. The ammonia smell of going-off fish can be masked by other ingredients.

Maviz · 02/10/2024 00:24

I had the most awful food poisoning from a fish cake

I wouldn’t because losing 24hrs+ to being sick isn’t worth the trade off of buying a new fish cake. Reckon it’s probably fine though.

Fishcakes are haunting me on Mumsnet!
I would have said chuck it, definitely not worth the risk. Did your DH get sick in the end, out of curiosity?

triballeader · 02/10/2024 16:13

There is a big difference between a Use by date and a best before date.

A use by date, such as that on fish cakes etc is about food safety. If I was to serve an out of date use by date item to the public I could incur the wrath of the food standard agency for a very good reason.

It really is not worth out the hardest way if the use by date is true. Food poisoning from fish can be pretty nasty even if it looks and smells to be okay. Food that hosts some bacteria’s may not exhibit signs of food spoilage.

With a lapsed USE by date…..go straight to the bin. It will not be safe to eat.

With a lapsed best before date it should still be safe but always check for any signs of food spoilage first.

Thank you everyone. I didn't have it but DH did and he is so far OK 🤞

OP posts:
Balletdreamer · 02/10/2024 19:50

I give use by dates an extra 24 hours and that’s it.

Jc2001 · 03/10/2024 08:48

KnickerlessParsons · 01/10/2024 22:46

I'd give it a go.

Always good advice when it's someone else "giving it a go" 😀

Sorry, you were hoping that someone would tell you to eat it?
You even went as far as putting it in the oven?
Ok, here is what you do next;
breath in
breath out
breath in...
😀
