Hotel room not cleaned for three days

We recently went on a short three-night break to a 4-star hotel in the UK. They said it was their policy not to clean rooms, this meant our bed wasn’t made, cups washed, etc. It’s a long time since we’ve been on holiday due to Covid etc, just wondered if this is now normal? I thought it was disappointing but need to know AIBU before I write the review.

@CurlyhairedAssassin because we like the convenience of AI when traveling abroad. UK stays are SC but again we clean ourselves

Appleblum · 02/10/2024 01:12

Totally unacceptable. Some hotels now will advertise that they will only change bedding on the 3rd day, but cleaning should still happen every day.

It would make more sense if people put a sign like the do not disturb, with a tick list what needs doing - clean towels, topping up the tea/coffee, extra loo roll.

I bet some hotels don’t change the bedding but just make it more presentable. As one hotel I stayed at spilled a drop of coffee on a sheet and it was there the next day after the room service.

I wouldn't expect hotels to change bedding daily. Even if it had a small drop of coffee as I wouldn't change mine at hole for that.

I don't expect bedding to be changed every night, maybe on the third night if its 4/5 star. However it is a pain when the bin isn't emptied and towels aren't changed ( I like this every two nights on holiday). Sure I can empty my own bin and rinse out my own mug, but it kind of defeats the purpose of staying in a hotel.

I find these hilarious. It's not Downton Abbey. So what if they come in and draw your curtains and put a light on and put a chocolate on your pillow.....

Yes.

Former hotel manager here. Servicing hotel rooms doesn’t have to entail a sheet change every day, but a daily housekeeping visit keeps bins emptied, surfaces and carpets and bathrooms clean, replenishes towels, and keeps an eye - plus raises red flags for messy guests. Nothing worse than finding a trail of ants enjoying a pizza box in a bin, or smelly sanitary towels in the bathroom bin. People travelling for work or pleasure need to be able to have their rooms kept clean, as they’re not in their home environment, and shouldn’t be expected to live minimally cleaning up after themselves. Cups should be brought fresh each day, hot-washed, not rinsed in a bathroom sink. There’s nothing worse as a hotel housekeeper than cleaning a room where people - understandably, on their holidays - have piled up items to be disposed of. If I’m staying four-star, I expect my room and bathroom to be kept cleaner than home. And I’m not bringing wipes and toilet bleach on my holidays.

This is exactly what we would have liked - we didn’t expect clean sheets every day, or our beds turned down at night with a chocolate on the pillow as some posters have suggested, just what we would regard as a normal service. Just to say - we did ask for the room to be serviced but were refused, it “wasn’t policy” but we weren’t told this at all when booking. Apart from that we had a good stay, but we won’t be returning!

Why do you expect clean sheets every day? That's crazy.
Clean towels daily is incredibly wasteful too. No need.

Mum2jenny · 02/10/2024 21:24

Depends what you are paying. If it’s megabucks, I’d expect fresh sheets and towels on a daily basis. But if it’s mainstream,I wouldn’t.

ARichtGoodDram · 02/10/2024 21:45

The last two hotels we stayed in had a hanger similar to the DND saying "please make up my room".

They both also asked at check in if we wanted it done daily or otherwise.

CasperGutman · 02/10/2024 22:04

Hotel housekeeping often annoys me, tbh. They always seem to be in the room when I come back from a leisurely breakfast, wanting to sort myself out ready for the day. I end up feeling awkward: should I ask them to come back later? Before now I've ended up just loitering around in the corridor waiting for them to leave because I'm not in the mood for a conversation.

I don't need bedding changed when it's only been used for one night, I haven't filled the bin up, I haven't somehow managed to use all six teabags already, and I didn't need the floor vacuuming so soon. So, if I remember then I leave the Do Not Disturb hanger on the door when I go out.

I'm not sure this "no housekeeping" policy is a widespread thing in establishments rated 4 star and above, but it's certainly become more common in cheaper chain places. Premier Inn for example say they'll only clean you room of you ask, I think by midday. Otherwise they'll leave you alone. Fine by me!

allmycats · 02/10/2024 22:33

I expect bathrooms cleaned and towels/toiletries replaced. Cups etc cleaned or replaced and tea etc topped up. Bedding changed every 3 days. Bins emptied daily. I am paying a premium for this service and would complain if it wasn’t done.

Thiswayorthatway · 02/10/2024 22:36

Not RTFT but did you ask them to clean the room?

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2024 22:40

I've never stayed in any hotel that they didn't do the rooms every day, certainly a four star! There's usually a sign now about not a hanging the towels unless you ask, but the rooms have always been done. Even stayed at a uni accommodation for a couple nights which was very basic but the room was cleaned each day!

MzPixie · 02/10/2024 22:43

Personally I always put the do not disturb sign on the door immediately lol
