Over the moon that the snoring is over!

Not really an AIBU but wanted to share because I've read so many my DH snoring is ruining my life threads.
They need to go to the doctor!! Me and my husband have been sleeping in separate rooms for nearly a year due to his snoring. He was referred to a sleep clinic and they sent him home with an appliance that attached to his finger that monitors his snoring. Results were, he stopped breathing 32 times per hour for up to 10 seconds!
Last week he was given a sleep apnea machine and omg it's amazing, complete silence!

Thanks for sharing! That's important information.

Amazing - I think I have this - will book appointment today, thank you for sharing!

Lookslikemeemaw · 16/10/2024 07:20

Yup, this saved our relationship - and possibly prevented serious health implications …

we have one, it was issued as much for mental health issues - ie the stress snoring was putting on relationship - than for the sleep apnoa which was mild

highly recommended!

So a few weeks in and I'm still over the moon with the fact I can sleep in my own bed. I thought the machine would be noisy but it's not. Husband feels a lot better too!
It was a long waiting list to get seen.. around 9 months to get the sleep Apnea diagnosis and around 2 weeks to then get a machine, but I highly recommend.

What does the machine do?

What does the machine do?

It holds the airway open whilst asleep and stops the snoring. But on a more serious note left untreated sleep apnea can actually be quite serious.. my husband was told he was at a bigger risk of stroke and heart attack because of how often he stops breathing when he's asleep.

@MaybeItsBecauseImALodoner my husband is at risk of suffocation from me and my pillow if his snoring continues! Will suggest drs to him! Thx

I know people who’ve had this and said it’s helped. Does your DH drive… someone I know had their driving license revoked following a sleep apnoea diagnosis!

DryBiscuit · 16/10/2024 16:04

People dont realise how serious sleep apnea is
Its not snoring, Its the fact that the person stops breathing multiple times and it is actually a killer

Its not given for ‘mental health’ reasons
Its given to stop the person dying

Ponoka7 · 16/10/2024 16:09

My DP stopped breathing more than he was. They said that it could have contributed to his heart attack. He was diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea, but they tried to fob him off. His lung consultant was the one who said he needed a CPAP machine. I agree it's bliss. Even when they are trying to get used to it and pulling it away etc, it's still quieter than the apnea.
@babyproblems usually it's only untreated sleep apnea which causes you to lose your licence, unless daytimeexcessivesleepiness is medically diagnosed. Once you have a CPAP, you don't need to declare it. There must be lots of people who have severe sleep apnea who are at risk of a car accident, because they are in denial.

Merryoldgoat · 16/10/2024 16:09

It is brilliant. I have one and it’s changed my life. I fell asleep without it last week and woke up feeling awful.

lololulu · 16/10/2024 16:23

Not always.

I have Sleep Apnea and I've just missed the cut off but wake all night and sleep a lot of the day.

Krumblina · 16/10/2024 16:45

Could you not hear him not breathing?
Sleep apnea has periods of no breathing and hen gasping as well as snoring.

ButtSurgery · 16/10/2024 16:47

I'm a snorer. I do not have sufficient sleep apnoeic events to qualify for any treatment.

DH has insomnia at the best of times, so it's a huge bone of contention here because I manage to sleep through his atrocious snoring but he doesn't manage to sleep through mine.

No I didn't realise he wasn't breathing at times but we've been sleeping in separate rooms because of the snoring.

GP referral to sleep
assessment ( they send equipment to your house) to machine to 3 months for us in NHS…

bookwormcrazy · 16/10/2024 20:33

I have sleep apnea but because it's in the mild to medium scale, I could choose between the cpap machine or to try a mouth device similar to a mouth guard/ retainer.

I decided to try the mouth guard first which is fitted by the dentist and it does make a world of difference to my snoring. My husband definitely knows when I'm not wearing it or i have taken it out.

lololulu · 17/10/2024 06:33

@bookwormcrazy

I have one. It's made my teeth wonky. I told the dentist. They said it happens as you get older but I can feel my teeth have moved as it's painful. I'm discharged from the dr and hospital and the dentist don't want to know.
