Made redundant, AIBU to be shocked?

I was just made redundant. It doesn't make any sense to me as for months I have been trained up by my manager to be able to take on some of their responsibilities when they left the company after handing in their notice. Everything was transferred and handed over to me, clients were told, I had to complete various courses/certifications. My manager must have spent hours and hours training me up on things. My manager's last day was Friday, and today I have been let go, effective immediately. Apparently my role is no longer needed as the work will be outsourced to a different team - the same team I was asked to write guidelines for and have a meeting with to present our ways of working as they were apparently looking to align on processes - little did I know I was just training my replacements.

I spoke to my ex-manager and they didn't know this was going to happen and they are shocked. None of my colleagues knew either, even the senior ones. I had lots of tight deadlines this week to meet for clients, but the upper management have just gotten rid of me. I didn't even have time to send over my half-finished work before my email was locked out.

I know it's just a business decision but the timing of it just seems so out of the blue.

How long have you worked there? If over 2 years I’m not sure they can just get rid of you, they’d have to follow the proper process.

I am really sorry to hear this. No advice. Yes it's shocking. I am not sure what your legal position is. Have you been with the company for at least 2 years?

Beezknees · 01/10/2024 17:12

I was made redundant last year. It wasn't completely out of the blue as I knew the company was struggling financially. The business went into administration though so we were all made redundant. They didn't even have the money to pay us our final wages as the bank removed their overdraft facility so we had to wait for our redundancy payments.

Unsure how it would work with you as it doesn't sound like your company has gone bust like the one I worked at but if you've been there over 2 years they'll have to pay you redundancy.

They can't just do that you know. Phone ACAS.

Pay redundancy and discuss what other roles in the company might be suitable for you. It's if you have been with the company for 2 years (stupid rule in my opinion). Please phone ACAS

I have only been there 18 months. :(

I am so sorry, having been made redundant 4 times, it’s not easy to understand why. My DS1 lost his close department colleague to redundancy last year, they replaced her with 3 people, none of which are any good and today DS2 has come home saying his work mate of 3 years is being made redundant despite them praising him not long ago. So both my DS’s aren’t happy at the moment.

Whatafustercluck · 01/10/2024 17:50

Sorry to hear this op, there must be something in the water as my dh was also told today that they're making his post redundant. 23 years he's worked there, so will at least get a financial cushion but he's 55 and really worried nobody else will take him on.

Your organisation has treated you really badly. I'm so sorry. And sorry too that you don't have protection because you've been there less than two years.

Kosenrufugirl · 01/10/2024 18:36

We need a change in law to entittle workers to full protection after 3 months. 2 years is a disgrace

I'm not sure about 3 months. That might saddle employers with useless employees. Maybe somewhere in between?

Yes they can. They just did.

YourLastNerve · 01/10/2024 20:32

What about your notice period? Are they paying you that?

I used to run a small business with 6 members of staff in an industry where people come and go for all sorts of reasons. I used to know by the end of the 1st month (if not sooner) what kind of employee joined our team. I never quite managed to predict the performance from the interview
