Someone’s using my phone number for temu account

Keep getting verification codes via text from Temu. Have gone onto the website and if I try to login in using the phone number it shows you the partial email of who the account belongs to (doesn’t actually log you in but I could if I confirmed it was my account)

anyway even though the email is only partially visible there’s enough there for me to realise I know the person (there’s also a blurred profile picture). I don’t want to contact the person directly for lots of reasons but can’t find a way to go through the contact Temu page without logging in.

Anyone know how I can contact temu via email as there seems to be no specific one when I google. I just want my phone number removed from the account.

It sounds like you think this person deliberately gave your number. Is it possible that they didn’t put their own number because someone else monitors it? If they’ve had problem spending in the past, maybe a partner or relative is watching for evidence of more? It would be weird to give a number they couldn’t access, but maybe they just needed to add any genuine number to get the account registered.

Anyway, in your position I would see whether I could log in and close the account. It’s possibly the only reliable way to unlink your number from that account. In the unlikely event your relative complains, you say “What? Why would you have used my phone number? That’s really weird. I was getting loads of unwanted messages. I thought that was a scam so I closed the account.“

@MaterCogitaVera is spot on
log on to the account, remove your number for it |(maybe substitute theirs if you know it, or possibly give the number for Action Fraud) then close the account

Yes I think they have deliberately added it and have done so to avoid someone monitoring their phone.

I’m really reluctant to access the account myself as I think there is a possibility they have previously used someone else’s bank card for purchases. I think I could be seen as complicit in some way if I personally access the account.

I would email them as you can see the email that is linked and say i am wondering why my mobile number has been linked to this Temu account and email address and see what they say, i would also ask them to remove it as you keep getting notifications. I would just outright ask them and see what awkward reply you get.. They may not reply but they may then just remove the number..

Why not contact the person concerned and tell them to pack it in or you will report as fraud to the Police?

Ah, okay. I wonder whether you can somehow report this to your mobile phone provider? To be honest, if you can cope with the hassle your best bet might be to ask the mobile provider to change your number. Tell them what’s happening. In a weird way, it’s a kind of harassment - signing your mobile number up for services and accounts that are not your own, and making you worry that you’re potentially responsible for any misuse of those services. So if you think you could keep a new number out of the hands of this relative, it would solve the problem. And you have a record that you’ve taken steps to stop them from misusing your number, which should help you feel a bit more secure. I don’t feel it’s very likely you could be held accountable for anything, but I do understand why it worries you.

TEMU are well known for giving big money off coupons for new accounts, I’m guessing they are registered them self several times to make referrals for money off but each profile needs a different email and phone number.

Thank you I may speak with phone provider and see if they have advice

I’ve never used Temu but that would make a lot of sense

Is this person someone you actually know OP? Is that what you suspect?

Createausername1970 · 02/10/2024 21:50

I would contact the person and say, "Hello fraudster, it's really odd but I keep getting messages from Temu on my phone. When I checked, it's my number and your email address!!! No clue how that happened, but can you log in and remove my number. Thanks".

ABirdsEyeView · 02/10/2024 22:08

I wouldn't log into the account - temp might take that as verification and it does link you to their account.
I'd call fraud action line and report it. It's cheeky af to do this. Obviously if it's your sister or someone you actually care about, kick their arse and get them to stop, but don't actually report.

DixonD · 02/10/2024 22:15

I think in your situation, as annoying as it is, I’d change my phone number.

I would just delete the messages and not worry about it. You haven’t verified the number so can’t be tied to it.

This. Why wouldn't you just tell them?

MayaPinion · 03/10/2024 08:33

Make sure you contact Temu on the links provided above to request the number is removed as it has been falsely assigned to someone else's account. They won't do anything but at least you have a paper train should you need it.

coldcallerbaiter · 03/10/2024 15:03

BeMintBee · 02/10/2024 22:31

Yes someone I know

Maybe they tried to create it but found the number needed code verification, so unless they have access to your phone, no harm done I guess.

if it’s your teen daughter, then nothing they do would surprise me.
