Car Troubles WWYD?

Desperately need some advice from the collective MN conscious on what to do regarding my car.

Bought on PCP and in December either need to pay the balance, hand the car back or take out a new monthly payment plan. My preference is to hand the car back. However....

  • About 18months ago the sat nav screen started playing up but otherwise radio working etc.
  • Took car into the dealer and they identified coins in the CD player as the cause (DC/DH!)
  • They offered to replace MMI to the tune of £2K to which I said no thanks (as was working fine except fuzzy screen).
  • On getting the car back the screen/radio no longer worked but the MMI fan ran continuously (something I only realised after two consecutive mornings finding the car battery dead)
  • Took the car to dealer and again they said MMI at fault for dead battery and again offering £2K replacement.
  • Again I declined as was cash strapped and asked (ended up begging) them to disconnect the MMI to stop the CD player fan from draining the battery

Fast forward 18months of no car troubles other than having no music during the drives. However, I'm anxious about what to do in December. If I were to hand the car back would they charge me £2K to fit a new MMI? I see second hand MMI for this model for a few hundred on ebay. Could I buy a replacement and accept a charge for them to fit it? Would they even fit it?

Would really appreciate any advise about the best course of action. Thanks.

You'll definitely be charged, it could be more or could be less than £2k. They won't replace it using a second hand one, to be honest part a PCP agreement is usually that any works need to be carried out by an approved garage, check your agreement. When I handed mine back there were a lot of charges for really small things which really I'm surprised weren't general wear and tear. Depends how much you would have to pay, but I wish now I'd taken a loan to pay the payment and then sold it rather than pay the charges.

That's what I was worried about. Why would they insist on a brand new MMI when the car itself isn't brand new?
