To ask for sponsorship to walk a mile a day?

I saw a fundraising initiative for a local charity, you basically walk one mile per day for a month. I thought id sign up but my mum said today 'you can't ask people for money to walk a mile a day, I do that going to the toilet and back!'.

She's got a point hasn't she? Should I do something a bit more challenging. I don't want people taking the piss when I ask for sponsors.

I think unless you're under the age of 10 or have a serious physical disability then yes, it's not very challenging and I wouldn't be enthusiastic about sponsoring you!

Gigihadid · 30/09/2024 16:16

in my mind it depends if that’s a challenge for you. If you’re generally fit and healthy walking a mile is not a thing I’d want to sponsor you for.

TickingAlongNicely · 30/09/2024 16:16

I wouldn't sponsor an adult without any healthy issues or disabilities to walk a mile a day. Or a child above 10yo.

HelloCheekyCat · 30/09/2024 16:17

Yeah I think thAt a bit cheeky, according to my fitbit I can walk a mile just getting ready & getting out of the house in the morning 😆,

I.sponsored 2 10 year olds to do 100 skips a day, that's a bit more of a challenge!

TimelyIntervention · 30/09/2024 16:18

A young child or an adult with a physical or mental condition which made that a big challenge for them? Yes. The average (fit or unfit) person? No.

Mydogisaknob · 30/09/2024 16:19

10 miles a day maybe... One mile is embarrassing

Oumpkinpie193 · 30/09/2024 16:20

Phew! Thank goodness for my mum! I'll do something else for the charity instead. I think they're just desperate for people to join in so they're making it as accessible as possible.

Do you mean one mile on top of what you already walk? Even so, a mile would take about 15 mins!

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 30/09/2024 16:21

I'd be annoyed if any functioning adult asked me to sponsor them for that. I'd rather just be asked for a donation to the charity.

5128gap · 30/09/2024 16:21

If people want to support the cause they will sponsor you for anything. Personally I'd prefer this than being asked to sponsor someone to indulge themselves in an adventure like a sky dive or some other expensive jolly, with a fraction left over for the charity. All I'd say is ask in a very low key way. Just email them what you're doing and tell them to get in touch if they're interested in sponsoring you. Don't put anyone in a position where they have to give you a direct yes or no.

Imfreetofeelgood · 30/09/2024 16:22

3 mile a day is reasonable - as long as it's an actual walk, and not just tottung up your days steps.

Dollshousedolly · 30/09/2024 16:22

You could challenge yourself - walk the mile a day and donate £1 yourself to the charity for every mile you walked over the 30 days.

To be honest, being asked to sponsor this sort of thing annoys me. I like to decide where I donate myself, not to feel obliged to sponsor someone.

NotMeNoNo · 30/09/2024 16:22

I did a 26 miles sponsored walk last year, it was brutal, took months of training. My friend raised nearly as much for 2 minutes abseiling from a building. I mean that probably says something about how good she is at raising money relative to me, but it's made me think. You basically sponsor someone because you like them or support the charity, what you can afford . The challenge is fairly irrelevant.

itwasnevermine · 30/09/2024 16:23

Yes. I walk 5 miles a day

TwattyMcFuckFace · 30/09/2024 16:23

That's pretty much my walk to and from work every day (half a mile each way).

But whatever you choose to do, just realise that a lot of people hate being asked to sponsor fundraisers.

I must admit, I rarely do it.

This. No one cares about your abseiling! They either want to donate or not.

sonjadog · 30/09/2024 16:25

Five miles a day would be more like it. That is a real challenge for a month.

BabyR · 30/09/2024 16:26

She has a point.
You could word it that you’re raising money for X charity if anyone wants to donate. I fear the 1mile will make people scoff a little.

I'd be in awesome of anyone having time for a 5 mile walk everyday!

easylikeasundaymorn · 30/09/2024 16:27

What's your reason for wanting to do it in the first place?

If you were specifically looking to fundraise anyway and that was the first thing you saw then yes, look again for something a bit more challenging.

If you just happened to see it and thought that was something you'd like to do (as a bit of a kick up the bum to get yourself walking a bit more) then just do it anyway and "sponsor" yourself for twenty quid or something. Perhaps get a friend to sign up and if either of you don't do it you have to give the other your money to make it a bit more fun.

Usually people ask for sponsorship because they want to challenge themselves or they've got a personal link to the charity. Money is tight for most people atm and more so around Christmas so tbh I would be unlikely to sponsor something who is doing something pretty easy "just because" - it would usually be only if i wanted to donate to that charity.

Saltedbutter · 30/09/2024 16:32

As somebody else said, unless you have some form of disability or you’re under 10 then I would assume it’s a joke as a sponsorship should be something challenging!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/09/2024 16:41

Not a chance, sorry.

Getonwitit · 30/09/2024 16:42

If you are physically disabled or you are under 3 or over 90 i will sponsor you, if you are between those ages and healthy i will tell you to bugger off.

zingally · 30/09/2024 16:43

I think adults asking for any sort of sponsorship is a bit silly tbh... Sponsorship for physical challenges is for kids. It would have to be something really "out there" and physically VERY hard for me to even consider sponsoring an adult to do anything.
A mile a day is a pathetically small amount for the averagely fit adult.

Londonrach1 · 30/09/2024 16:45

I probably do that too back and forth collecting a child etc. 5 miles really isn't that far. You probably already do that without realizing. 1 mile take you 15 mins.
