Pets more important than wife!

GreenSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2024 08:37

I'm really not someone who sees patriarchy trampling over women everywhere but can't believe that the Prostate Cancer UK advice for men who have radioactive seeds placed in their prostate details how it's best not to have a pet sit on your lap for the first few months but nothing about the risks of your wife having sex with you - just that it's best to use a condom for the first while in case a radioactive seed passes through to her! Surely the close contact near the seeds has to be a radiation risk. It's not even given a second thought that the woman's health might need to be thought of.

AIBU to be outraged?

Permanent seed brachytherapy

Permanent seed brachytherapy involves implanting tiny radioactive seeds into your prostate gland to remove cancer cells in the prostate.

I mean, pets are significantly smaller than A Woman.

Chillisintheair · 30/09/2024 17:44

It depends on the facts of how dangerous the two activities are.

JohnTheRevelator · 30/09/2024 17:48

How bizarre. But I suppose it's just another shining example of everyone/everything being more important than women.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 30/09/2024 17:52

It seems the dosage isn't dangerous for an adult woman. It says clearly not to sit close to pregnant women or children for the first two months (a short cuddle at chest height is OK). But if the dosage is safe inside an adult man, then it's presumably safe next to an adult woman.

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 30/09/2024 17:53

(but if it were my husband, I'd probably avoid sitting on his lap for a few months!)

Don't be ridiculous. It's not that at all. Read the link.

AnnaMagnani · 30/09/2024 18:02

There's a lot of detailed information in that link about risks to sexual partners (who could be male or female) from semen and anal sex so I think they have thought about it a lot.

Plus pets are a lot smaller than a human being. Humans also don't tend to sit on each other's laps for hours on end either.

So yes, I do think YABU to see misogyny in absolutely everything.

Verv · 30/09/2024 18:03

Theyve well and truly covered sex without raising a risk to partner - this implies that it is a safe activity.
Theres a big difference between a 2kg pet and a 70kg woman. Perhaps one is more likely to be affected than the other.

I dont think this is an issue of patriarchy.

Woahtherehoney · 30/09/2024 18:04

There’s plenty of men who aren’t married to a woman and may instead be with a man…that isn’t mentioned either, because it’s not a risk to adults.

You’re looking for sexism where there isn’t any.

sommerjade · 30/09/2024 18:13

Sadly many men who are treated for prostate ca with surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatment can't easily have sex again without help of viagra etc; struggle with continence, and can grow breasts all of which is distressing- my dad & grandad had prostate cancer plus I've cared for (quite young) patients with it so I learnt quite a bit about the issues.
It's not a nice disease and I think you are seeing issues where there are none.

To be honest a woman / another man with a partner who has had radiotherapy is lucky if the sufferer is actually able to have sex again in the first place.

Quite, so it can radiate out to a child, so it can certainly radiate out to someone cojoined in coitus.

They have a whole section on the risk to men who penetrate men who have had the seed implanted.

Yes, but a child is child-sized, and an adult is adult-sized, that's the difference....

GoadyMcBigot · 30/09/2024 19:46

FFS OP you’re determined to be outraged.

the article is not in the least sexist.

there are many, many, many other examples of sexism in this world that absolutely enrage me but this is not one.

GreenSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2024 19:36

They have a whole section on the risk to men who penetrate men who have had the seed implanted.

Because they were clear that there was a risk to the male partner.

Similarly they were also clear that after 5 ejaculations there was no risk to a female partner having penis in vagina sex.

You are just determined to be upset.

GreenSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2024 19:36

They have a whole section on the risk to men who penetrate men who have had the seed implanted.

Well, it covers anal sex, whether that be with a man or woman, and I imagine they specifically cover anal sex because even after you have followed the other sex-related advice (leaving it for a few days post implant and wearing a condom for a while) there remain specific risks associated with anal sex.

If you're determined to be outraged about something, maybe see if you can find a different topic where it would be more appropriate.

Icanflyhigh · 30/09/2024 20:58

I'd be outraged if it specifically mentioned not having sex with your pets....

Honestly OP do you overthink EVERYTHING?

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 30/09/2024 21:01

Your arms must hurt, that's an enormous reach!

YABU & ridiculous

AltitudeCheck · 30/09/2024 21:01

GreenSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2024 19:36

They have a whole section on the risk to men who penetrate men who have had the seed implanted.

The dose of radiation someone else could get from being near the seeds will depend on the proxity to the source of the radiation and the amount of cumulative time spent at close proximity.

Without wishing to be indelicate, if a man is receiving anal penetration, his partner is a lot, lot closer to his prostate than if he's the one doing the penetrating!

The type of radiation released by the seeds will only travel a very short distance, only negligible amounts will be detectable outside the man's body.

A child or pet could potentially spend a lot more time on or near someone's lap than an adult having sex would do!

Radiation exposure inutero when a foetus is developing has potentially more serious consequences.

The actual risk in any of these scenarios is small but hard to quantify and so avoiding exposure is the most obvious advice to give.

I mean, pets are significantly smaller than A Woman.

My pet gorilla is larger than a woman. and is looking rather disgruntled at not being able to sit on my lap.
In fact it is a bit disconcerting, the sideward glances, the big sighs and humphs. I think I might have to let her sit on my lap after all. (the gorilla, not the wife. Obviously)

YABU to be “outraged” about fact based and surely medically backed advise.

Makingchocolatecake · 30/09/2024 22:46

I'm not sure what these are but surely they are tested for stuff like this? What about sleeping next to someone too?

hoarahloux · 01/10/2024 00:23

GreenSkiesAtNight · 30/09/2024 19:35

Quite, so it can radiate out to a child, so it can certainly radiate out to someone cojoined in coitus.

Can you tell me the difference between a child and an adult person, the latter being engaged in sex with a man (wearing a condom, as advised)?

Do you think there might be different risk levels based on the physical stature of the person?

And do you think this is specific misogyny regarding radiation exposure?

If so, why do they not advise only male children avoid sitting on the lap of a person experiencing this treatment? Surely better to cut it off at the source. Expose the female child to radiation early! Kill and/or sterilise her! We hate women!

XenoBitch · 01/10/2024 00:33

YABU, your outrage is ridiculous. It literally says "You will need to avoid sitting close to pregnant women or children during the first two months after treatment"

Avoiding close contact with pregnant women after a radioactive type cancer treatment is normal. It is not ujst for men with prostate cancer.

kitsuneghost · 01/10/2024 09:42

Are we forgetting we are actually putting these inside an adult.
So if patient can handle it then surely another adult having occasional sex will be fine.

Yes there may be extreme cases where it would be an issue such as anaemia but I am sure that would be discussed
