To think door to door sales/charity should be banned?

I’m honestly sick of it. I get it constantly at my door and usually the sales people (calendars, cleaning products, cards) become quite nasty once you say no.

The amount of times I’ve had someone doing “an internet survey”. Another charity one for children, where I politely said “I was interested” he demanded to know if I had children - erm fuck off literal strangers at my door.

I just feel sorry for genuine vulnerable people.

Just put a sign on your door "No Cold Callers".
If someone knocks and you aren't expecting someone or a delivery open the door with the chain on first. If it's a cold caller just say a firm "no" and close the door.

I couldn't agree more I'm disabled and it's just hassle I don't need. I'm not going to donate anyway

Needmorelego · 29/09/2024 18:43

Or have one of those camera things and just don't answer the door.

What really annoys me is how rude they are.

Regardless. I just think it’s such an invasion to interrupt people at home in order to get their money and personal details.

I don't think they are collecting for charity. It's largely a scam.

I just say I already donate to to my preferred charity and I won't have dusters in the house as they are harbingers of pestilence and disease.

Needmorelego · 29/09/2024 18:47

@storyofastory I agree to be honest.
I just go for the don't answer the door option (I have a peep hole so just look through first).

Disturbia81 · 29/09/2024 18:49

Get a cam. Put up a sign. I hate them too but these things stop them or I can at least ignore them

2k2j · 29/09/2024 18:54

It ought to be illegal. I’m sure loads would sign on change.org

ive got a no cold callers sign and am thinking of a camera

Icecreamandcoffee · 29/09/2024 19:00

I agree. I hate them. If I answer the door I always say no thank you and shut the door on them. I hate the ones that are rude or very forceful, I always take their name and report them to the charity/ sales company. We live on a street with lots of old people (many quite vulnerable due to declining health/ dementia ect) and I hate the way some charity groups and sales groups pray on our street.

I would also like to see chugging on high streets and charities/ salespeople in shop foyers severely limited. One of our supermarkets is awful, every week there is a charity and a gas/electric/ insurance/ sky/ insulation / window / solar panel sales person there, so it's like running the gauntlet with them. Some of them are very very persistent. Our local shopping street is awful for chugging too. Some of the chuggers in our local area do chase people down the street and try and block your way as you walk as well.

A ring doorbell is your friend.

LauritaEvita · 29/09/2024 19:12

Yes, it can be horrible. I had one representing a charity of something that has completely devastated my family. When I politely declined to donate, he started barking at me ‘do you know how terrible this disease it?’ Trying to guilt trip me! Unfortunately i do know all too well but did not fancy discussing this with a stranger who would no doubt use my upset to try and get money out of me. I had just been peacefully in my own home and this encounter was completely unexpected and upsetting!

Edited

I hate the chuggers who comment on your appearance when you’re just walking down the street, like ‘hey, lady with the funky hair’ or ‘I see you’re smiling there- amazing! Stop for a chat!’ Eff off and stop shouting about my appearance or what my face is doing!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/09/2024 19:17

I cannot abide these people.

They always appear shocked that people don’t want to hand out their card details to a random person on their doorstep.

One turned up the other day after I’d been at work for around 30 hours and was upset when I told him I didn’t have the energy to entertain him.

I wish this would die out.

BadSkiingMum · 29/09/2024 19:33

I generally defeat the duster salesmen by telling them that my husband doesn’t allow me to buy things at the door.

This completely flummoxes them as they don’t really have an answer for it, but it also chimes in with their own (probably quite traditional) views so they can’t really argue against it either!

Sansan18 · 29/09/2024 19:41

I recently had callers asking me to purchase a £50 draw ticket for a local sports team, a sport which no one in my family play or support. They waved a card reader at me and told me I didn't need cash.
It's v difficult to say no and they swamp the neighborhood so just keep calling.

KayDog · 30/09/2024 10:51

I say I am the nanny/au pair, then they ask me when they'll be back and I'll say late tonight as they're shift working. Just gets them off the doorstep and they never question it! Just have to make sure my kids aren't around to drop me in it by calling me mummy!
