To pay for a private autism assessment

Aibu to jump the queue by paying for a private autism assessment for my child?

It's a 3+ year wait locally. My child has an older sibling diagnosed autistic via CAMHS and frankly they were pretty useless other than giving the diagnosis. However the diagnosis has opened various sources of support that wouldn't be available without a diagnosis- specific projects that only take referrals once diagnosed. School have also been much better after diagnosis as prior to this they didn't take the issues seriously (high masking children).

To afford private assessment would mean no holiday next year and cutting back on some other areas. I'm a single parent so money is tight. It would be a legitimate Psychiatrist led process following all NHS guidelines.

There is a middle ground here: you can use right to choose. Your GP can refer you to a private provider that has the appropriate contracts in place and the NHS will pay.
Some providers offer in person assessment and others online. Waiting times vary but we were referred in Feb and had assessment/diagnosis this month.

YY, I was going to say Right to Choose. That's what we did for DC1. There's info about RTC here: https://adhduk.co.uk/right-to-choose/ (ADHD website but has info about some autism assessment providers too) and there is also a really helpful FB group: www.facebook.com/share/g/GzQGCD3PBr1baH3h/
