To wonder how on earth they will sentence a 96 year old?!

news.sky.com/story/woman-96-admits-causing-death-of-pedestrian-after-she-panicked-and-mounted-the-kerb-13204265

A 96 year old woman killed a woman in her 70s after she lost control of her car. Due to be sentenced on Monday, apparently. It's obviously completely tragic that a woman has died, but I can't imagine a woman who is almost 100 will get a custodial sentence?

I agree. I just take exception to people pretending it costs pennies to use taxis.

you think £1500 is pennies to insure a car?

I’ve got over 20 years no claims, I’m in my late 40s and my insurance has risen steeply this year. Even last year they weren’t as low as the prices you’re quoting. I’m not driving a flashy expensive car either.

Love to know where money supermarkets getting those figures from.

You’d be better off asking them than me.

18 months suspended.

What would you have sentenced her to?

And if she’d been driving a Nissan micro rather than a Chelsea tractor, the horrific tragedy could have been avoided.

Or at least been far far less horrific. Agreed. We do have to take responsibility for which type of killing machine we choose to take control of.

What would you suggest as her punishment? And for what purpose?

Do you see imprisonment primarily as a deterrent? (And do you think that would work here?),

Or do you propose prison as a punishment? (In which case what additional punishment would it give to a lady who sounds shattered and isolated by what happened? And has also received a £2000 fine)

Or to protect the public from the perpetrator (in which case what more would prison add when this lady voluntarily handed in her licence and has a suspended sentence)

It’s an article from a national newspaper sharing findings from an insurance comparison site.

Do I believe everything I read on the internet? No. Which is why I’m challenging what is being written here.

Would you rather I ignored statistics on insurance from an insurance comparison website in favour of what Blue Crackle on mumsnet says? 😂😂😂

A 5 year driving ban for causing death is a joke! Her age or whether she could be dead by the end of that should be totally irrelevant to the sentence. To think someone can just go “oh no the peddle slipped” and kill someone only to be behind the wheel 5 years later is utterly depressing.

SauviGone · 30/09/2024 16:50

£2000 fine for taking a life is an absolute joke.

If people, whatever their age, judge themselves as ok to drive, they should be ok to face the full consequences if they kill someone.

She's been given a get out of jail card purely because of her age. It's disgusting.

A lady who sounds "shattered" by what happened? Yeah, not as shattered as her victims family though eh, now she's sat cosy at home with a cup of tea and some cake.

If it was my child who had been killed I would struggle to see a £2k fine as justice. ‘Oh the poor old dear has to live with herself’ doesn’t really account for what has happened. I don’t know what I would want to see, how do you punish someone of that age? I suppose all you can do is remove their remaining days of freedom. There needs to be some form of deterrent.

My first boyfriend was knocked down and killed.
The driver going to prison didn't bring him back.

She’s not going to be back behind the wheel when she’s 101.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 28/09/2024 23:06

You cannot possibly know this.

Of course @dreamer24 can know she wouldn’t drive at that age. She’s actually the only person who can know it.

BIossomtoes · 30/09/2024 17:22

Doesn’t matter, she shouldn’t be given a lower ban because of her age.

Completelyjo · 30/09/2024 17:42

You need to apply a bit common sense here. If at the end of her ban at age 101 she decided she wanted to drive again, she would then have to sit the compulsory extended driving test. How likely do you think it is this scenario is likely to happen.

As for those saying she should be jailed. Realistically what would that achieve, other than use resources within the prison service that would be better used on repeat offenders.

You have to sit a test at the end of your ban so it's all pretty academic

My whole life was wrecked by a driver crashing into my boyfriend. I can still feel some compassion for this lady who made a very bad decision to drive that day and should not have done so. I expect some of the people frothing on here have got behind the wheel on days they weren't exactly feeling splendid. I bet heaps of you drove as new and sleep deprived parents for starters...

(I didn't, the deep trauma from my boyfriends death meant I didn't learnt to drive until my children were at school)

Almost half a million over 70s are still working.

Do you uber and taxi everywhere?

Do you find it cheaper than driving?

I’m willing to bet no-one in their 90s is still working in the UK!
