To delay the nasal flu vaccine week after having croup

Just after some advice. My son (age 3) had a nasty bout of croup a week ago which needed steroid medication at hospital. He has had a nasty cough ever since. He is due to have the nasal flu vaccine today and is still coughing this morning, I'm just wondering if I should delay until the cough is gone?

I’d go along to the appointment and explain the situation and let them give the professional advice.
Worst that happens is they say no and you can reschedule.

I’d delay it. As far as I know, it’s a live vaccine and you shouldn’t have these while on steroids.

Id not give it to him at all given it has no efficacy

He's not been on any medication since, it was the one dose of steroid. I'm just worried as last year he had a temp following the vaccine. I just don't want him to be poorly again.

I would go and see what they advise. The main concern is if he’s congested, it won’t actually stay in his nose. If his nose is clear, I’d give it to him unless they advise not to. These appointments are not easy to get if you are having it done in the surgery and they do run out after a point.

Don’t bother then. I’m not this year for similar reasons. If they’d had it in the past and had a healthy winter, I’d be all for it but my kids were unwell after it. I saw no improvement in their resistance to flu in previous years so not bothering this year.

A bit of a temperature after it is nothing compared to flu. Please don’t listen to anecdotes on here that it has no efficacy. They don’t offer it for no reason.

Go to the appointment and go by what the professionals suggest.

3 is too young in my opinion for the flu vaccine anyway. Unless he's immune compromised let him catch flu naturally and let his immune system develop naturally. Natural immunity is longer lasting and more effective against different strains of flu.

Go in and be honest about recent illness and ask advice.

Flu in 3 weeks time would be harder on him than the vaccine if it’s safe for him to have the vaccine now. If it isn’t, then they will rebook you for in a week or two, and you won’t be classed as no show

Pandasnacks · 28/09/2024 08:52

Go in and take their advice, they are the professionals. And unless I was advised against it I'd get the flu immunisation today because a fever is absolutely fine, but getting flu straight after croup would be rubbish and I'd want to avoid that.

Can the nasal spray flu vaccine be given to patients when they are ill?
The nasal spray flu vaccine can be given to people with mild illnesses (e.g., diarrhea or mild upper respiratory tract infection with or without fever). However, nasal congestion might limit delivery of the vaccine to the nasal lining. Delaying vaccination with LAIV until the nasal congestion is reduced should be considered. People with moderate or severe illness, with or without fever, should generally wait to be vaccinated until they have recovered. Your healthcare provider can provide advice about when to get vaccinated if you are feeling ill.
