To expect our new neighbours not to use a petrol plower to plow their garden when they know we've got a 20mo who goes to bed early?!

WanderingTrolley · 21/04/2008 19:26

How have you brought this up with them....?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 21/04/2008 19:27

My DS would sleep through a nuclear bomb then and now.

brimfull · 21/04/2008 19:27

pita-could you move her to the front or sound proof her room somehow

not much good in the height of summer really when you want the windows open

mine could sleep through a bomb though, maybe she'll get used to it

BrightShinySun · 21/04/2008 19:32

Ha ha i know 7.30 is early and IAprobablyBU but u no how it is... 20mo crap sleeper,1st night shes gone off early for ages just want the world to be shhh...!

Its a rented house with no double glazing so rubbish sound proofing. Ah well maybe she'll sleep better as she gets older,we live in hope!

Plowing/ploughing? What are they, farmers? In a terraced house?

morningpaper · 21/04/2008 19:36

YABU

lots of people work during the day and only have time for this sort of thing in the evening

close the windows - surely a small child can sleep through the noise of a lawnmower?

brimfull · 21/04/2008 19:47

I do remember that feeling of wanting the world to be quiet though .

It is better if they get used to sleeping with noise.

I know someone who used to turn their phone off and cover the doorbell up when their dc went to bed

Greyriverside · 21/04/2008 19:50

I know how annoying it can be, but it probably can't be helped and they probably don't even think they are being especially noisy.

For what it's worth I remember my mum had the policy of NOT being quiet around sleeping kids. With such a big family in a tiny house she reckoned it wasn't practical and they'd get accustomed to it. Which we did really.

Long term plan - You can't demand they be quiet and it would only cause bad feeling, but if you can make friends with them now you may get to the point where you can mention the noise and work something out.

Lauriefairycake · 21/04/2008 19:52

You definitely need to hoover round her constantly, then she'll sleep through anything.

mamablue · 21/04/2008 19:52

I sympathise our old neighbours used to do the same ( until they had their own baby!!)
Could you explain and ask them nicely to do it before 7.30pm?

cory · 21/04/2008 19:54

I have always been told that you shouldn't be quiet around young children but should get them used to sleeping through a normal noise level from the start. Besides, if you have another one, how would you keep the baby from crying when older child wants to sleep or vice versa? Better to get them used to a little noise.

BrightShinySun · 21/04/2008 20:00

Well theyre quiet now anyway and she only stirred a bit. To be honest we're just making the most of the quiet as im due no2 in dec and then shes going to have to learn to sleep through noise or else it'll be hell!

PMSL by the way Monkeybird...you'd think wouldnt you! I dont know what the hell theyre doing the garden is about 6ft by 5ft and theyre going for a full on landscaping job!

YABU - i think people are perfectly entitled to mow their lawn in the early evening.

Why should they change their life just coz you've got a baby?

theBOD · 21/04/2008 21:41

yabu their life should not be affected by the fact that you have decided to have a baby. having friends over at the weekend and mowing the lawn are perfectly normal activities.
if they are having wild parties late into the night constantly then yes you'd have grounds for complaints.

DirtySexyMummy · 21/04/2008 22:00

Agree, YABU. You and your PFB are not the centre of the universe, however much you may think you are

Get double glazing put in if it bothers you, otherwise I would just be happy that the weather is good enough to mow the lawn at 7.30pm!

mamalovesmojitos · 21/04/2008 23:35

Was wondering. What exactly is a petrol plower? What does 'plow their garden' involve? Is it the same as mowing on a mower? Or is it like ploughing on a plough? Is it a farm? Is there grass?

nappyaddict · 22/04/2008 02:38

YABU - they probably don't get back from work til lateish so they can't do it any other time.

jalopy · 22/04/2008 07:05

Petrol mowers are bloody noisy.

FGS, who said you can sleep through that racket?

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/04/2008 07:28

Plowing the lawn, or mowing it?
When are they supposed to mow the lawn otherwise - presumably they are out at work during the day?
Very annoying I agree, but if you don't like living in a built up area then move to the countryside!

BrightShinySun · 22/04/2008 08:26

Just to clear up they were PLOUGHING as in they dug up all the grass and are now ploughing. Sorry my crap spelling confused things! To be honest its not the end of the world just a PITA,the whole row were really nice and considerate until they moved in!
