I am a very happy atheist and feel that I am kind, caring and considerate. Time and time again religious people show pity to those that haven't 'found' God and think that we are missing something. It really pisses me off.
I do see that they believe that some of their own fulfillment comes from their faith but why assume that I am lacking because I have none?

Woe betide anyone that thinks having a faith will make you more fulfilled.

Giddy aunt, I believe it because I'm convinced it's true, not because it makes my life any easier. Because it really, really doesn't.

PosieParker · 21/04/2008 20:28

They were so alarmed when I dared to question miracles in their historical context of mystics, etc. Lots and lots of 'Oh john chapter 5, verse 4 hee hee hee' jokes, five were married at 19, I'm sure if they believed in sex before marriage they wouldn't have been!!

..... don't have anything useful to say.

I wanted to agree, and then say something wonderfully clever and meaningful, but then decided that actually it's a bad idea to get into a debate about religion with people who do believe in God.. I'll just end up offending someone I don't want to.

SO, I'll just stick with YANBU.

was miserable

am now agnostic

and a bit happier

blithedance · 21/04/2008 21:11

YABU

most Christians are not like that. It's rather a sweeping assumption/generalisation to make, and why on earth does it bother you if you think their beliefs are a load of twaddle?

Greyriverside · 21/04/2008 21:33

Blithedance, maybe you are not like that, but I'm afraid I've seen lots of posts/articles/rants by religious people (not just christians) where they equate atheism with lack of morals, lack of emotional life, lack of decency and so on.

TheFallenMadonna · 21/04/2008 22:43

Then your annoyance should be directed at them. As I said before, some religious people...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 21/04/2008 22:45

If you were truly fulfilled, it would simply wash over you and wouldnt bother you

Greyriverside · 21/04/2008 23:03

TheFallenMadonna, yes most statements like that need to be qualified. Some religous people, most dentists and so on.

My annoyance (if that's the word) IS directed at them. They know who they are and anyone who reads this who isn't like that will know they are not.

VeniVidiVickiQV, lol at that. As it happens I am so happy lately that there's little that can keep me annoyed other than briefly. Life is good.

So yeah I could easily ignore it, but feel on principle certain behaviours should be challenged.
