Handyman in the House

Aquarius1234 · 25/09/2024 23:28

Would you think twice about having a handyman/ gardener in the house?
No personal recommendations. Just one of a handful advertised on next-door. Com.

No. Why?

CallMeFlo · 25/09/2024 23:47

No. I've had various tradesmen in my house. Painter, electrician, plumber, fcarpet fitters. Quite a range. Never given it a second thought.

I know any around here get a lot of recommendations etc. They'd basically destroy their business if anything untoward happened

Like what? I had a leak from all the rain this week and a 2 lovely men dealt with it. Wouldn’t even cross my mind to have not let them in, How would you deal with an emergency like that?

Tel12 · 26/09/2024 06:26

No, I do look up reviews though I know the failings

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 26/09/2024 06:35

Check reviews or get recommendations first and then no I wouldn't worry about it

Maray1967 · 26/09/2024 06:43

Try and get personal recommendations if you can rather than relying on reviews. We’ve never had any problems with people who were recommended to us, but the one time we chose someone based on being listed on a register, he did the job well (minor roofing repair) but then tried to walk off with a stack of our spare slates. He knew I’d seen him put them in his van but still tried to brazen it out as though I should just let him take them as a tip. It was a really embarrassing moment when I had to tell him to put them back in the garden. If he’d asked first I’d have said yes to taking half a dozen but I was furious that he’d just taken them thinking I’d be too embarrassed to challenge him.

I hate having tradesmen in the house. They make me anxious. But that's me stuff. It's not logical.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 26/09/2024 07:21

Not at all.

Nannerli · 26/09/2024 07:26

No.

Musicalmaestro · 26/09/2024 08:56

Agree with Maray1967, I once got someone from Checkatrade who was a chancer. I wouldn’t trust that register again.
I’d say personal recommendations are the best.

unsync · 26/09/2024 09:00

I usually go with trades that have been personally recommended by people I know. We have a village FB page and people post on there to ask.

Bored of the DH?

exprecis · 26/09/2024 09:03

I'm usually just grateful if one turns up

Aquarius1234 · 26/09/2024 10:03

This isn't about personal recommendations. ( as you can't always find someone who knows someone) or that is free/ not retired/ moved away.
It's when you just take a chance.
Tbh personal recommendations are never great either. All depends if someone can and wants to do the job properly.

No I don’t like unknown men in the house and I think that’s perfectly logical since suffering abuse from males

Yes of course

What's the problem?

What do you do if you need a plumber/builder/electrician/....? How do you get stuff mended/painted/carpet fitted/whatever?

There are a few women about in these kind of roles, but they are predominantly done by men.

DaisysChains · 26/09/2024 12:10

in order of preference:
do it myself
family/friend who are trades
someone recommended by family/friend

and if unavoidable to have completely unknown male then family/friend to be in house with me whilst work being carried out

is it a pita?

sure if it’s something I can’t do myself and it’s urgent or difficult to schedule but these are the circumstances unchecked male abuse leaves many women in so there it is

I have expanded my diy skills significantly as a necessity/result - which would likely annoy the fuck out of the main abuser

so that’s a plus
