Not sure about particular content creator

I have name changed. I’m not going to say who but there is a YouTuber who uploads specific content, they are obsessed with the war and post war time period and have turned their house completely into that style, they live their life as if it is still that time period and they love wearing outfits from that time period and I think that’s great, and I’m glad they are so passionate about something. But they have recently started uploading videos where they film themselves eating what people from that time period would’ve eaten on rations. I do see the educational aspect of that and I’m sure that’s what it’s about but there is so much information out there about it already and everyone from that time period did these things out of necessity and I think it is similar to playing poor? I’m not sure if that’s what’s happening or if I’m definitely being unreasonable? I may be biased and be offended as I have been particularly poor before but want to know if others feel the same?

Hard to really form an opinion without seeing their content.

There's a historian who eats and cooks Tudor dishes, it's the same sort of thing. I think you're over thinking it.

Lancrelady80 · 25/09/2024 19:40

I think it sounds fine. Clearly their passion.

mushpush · 25/09/2024 19:42

Oo that sounds really interesting actually!

I don't think it's playing poor, they're not pretending they've only got £1 to spend a week and playing poverty / using food banks for views etc - they're replicating a historical period, which seems just like larping to me?

baileys6904 · 25/09/2024 19:43

Did I miss the part where you're made to watch it?

Completelyjo · 25/09/2024 19:44

I don’t think cooking a trying a war time ration meal is really making fun of poverty though, I’m not sure what you’re getting at but if it bothers you so much just stop watching.

It sounds really interesting to me. I enjoy finding out how people from different eras lived and, while reading about something is informative, seeing somebody recreate it as it actually would have been can really help give a better understanding. I don't see it as "pretending to be poor", more trying to experience what people did during that time in order to fully appreciate the difficulties.

That person is most likely neurodivergent and that's their special interest. Social media accounts are usually focused on one specific area so, by nature, the industry attracts a lot of ND people who are creative and also have one obsessive interest they love to talk about.

Many ND creators really take their hobbies into extremes once they realise they're earning money and also have an audience keen to see more. So cooking rations or redoing a house doesn't seem unusual at all. The idea of poverty porn probably didn't even occur to them since they are enjoying the immersive nature of their special interest. It's only the post-war theme that might make this channel stand out a bit since it's not so common. But there are plenty of channels that cook meals from video games, from movies, from other countries etc.

On the topic of "playing poor", there are tons of channels in the budget cooking genre. Basically middle class housewives who are rolling in money due to their Youtube earnings, but eagerly cashing in with "Eat for a day on $1!" or "Feed your family for $10 a week" types of challenges. They go to dollar stores and buy the cheapest clearance ingredients to cobble together a bunch of gross, UPF-laden meals. Nobody genuinely believes that's all they're eating the whole week.

Didn't Sue Perkins and Giles Coren do exactly this in a TV series?

byteme1011 · 25/09/2024 20:01

I agree with @User645262 that the content creator is likely to be neurodivergent but I'd really need to consume the content to judge! I won't lie though I really enjoy doing silly things like making recipes from the 1940s.
