To think that doing something for yourself before work is important, especially for those WFH?

I’ve heard a lot about the benefits of taking time for yourself in the morning, rather than just rolling out of bed and diving straight into work. Whether it’s a quick workout, meditation, or even enjoying a cup of tea in peace, I feel starting the day with self-care sets a positive tone. What do you do for yourself before work, and do you think it makes a difference?

Yes very much so. I've WFH for over 8 years and I've always kept a 'commute' in my routine just a short 15 minute walk to the bottom of the road and back again before and after work. Just a bit of movement and not for very long to either get my brain into gear or decompress after an intense day.

stayathomer · 24/09/2024 20:31

My friend lives next to a beach and goes for a walk with her dog before wfh. I am sooooooo jealous (but happy for her because she’s a legend and had years of the shittest commute!)

MirandaWest · 24/09/2024 20:33

I’ve worked from home for over 9 years now. I start the day with either a run or a walk. It helps me wake up both physically and mentally

Arielsmummy · 24/09/2024 20:37

1000%. I've worked at home 6 years now and I do something every day. Normally the gym or a walk. It not only helps my physical but my mental health.

OriginalUsername2 · 24/09/2024 20:38

I heard a good idea on youtube - one morning hour of 10 minute blocks to get 6 good things done - ten mins of exercise, ten of reading / writing / drawing, etc.

MouseofCommons · 24/09/2024 20:43

Yanbu. Mine is either a walk to aldi or the textile and foil recycling point for 30 mins. Nothing exciting but it's fresh air and gets my blood pumping a bit.

One of my colleagues gets up at 8:45 and works straight from bed. She knows I'm horrified by this!

BoxOfCards · 24/09/2024 20:46

I don’t get time to as DC up very early then I’m getting ready / getting them ready, school run then back home then quick tidy up / housework before I log on by 9am.

I do try to go to gym or walk at lunch though

napody · 24/09/2024 20:46

Cuppa in the garden for me.

@MouseofCommons the specificity of a walk to the 'textile and foil recycling point' made me laugh!

Bellatrixpure · 24/09/2024 20:47

When I WFH ( 1 day a week) I go for a run outside before I start

CleanShirt · 24/09/2024 20:48

I've started getting up 10 minutes earlier to have a coffee in bed. Definitely puts me on a better footing for that day.

Givemegoldensun · 24/09/2024 20:51

Have a coffee and a bath. Do have to get up at 5.30 to do it though, otherwise baby awake and needing attention 😂

mynameiscalypso · 24/09/2024 20:51

Does repeatedly telling a 5 year old to eat his breakfast and get dressed while running around trying to tidy up and get sorted for work count as self-care?

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 24/09/2024 20:54

I've WFH for a few years now - my routine is up at 6:30am, walk my dog for 30/45 minutes, home to sort hair and face, start work at 8:15am. I walk the dog at lunch and after work I have a quick dinner then go to a gym class or swim.
I work 4 longer days so I can have one non-working day every week - bliss.
DCs are at uni and DH works long hours/often overseas so my routine is all about me these days.

EveryDayisFriday · 24/09/2024 20:54

I shower every morning, put on some lippy and perfume. After doing the home jobs, washer on/ defrost dinner/ empty dishwasher, I sit in the conservatory with a coffee, even better when the sun is streaming in until 1min before my start time.

Doggymummar · 24/09/2024 20:55

I have three hours before work. I sit on Mumsnet and LinkedIn doom scrolling and then moan I do less than 500 steps a day. You have inspired me to do something useful. I haven't been out the house since last Thursday so I shall start walking.

WickerMam · 24/09/2024 20:55

I go to the gym two mornings a week, but the other days I give myself the gift of an extra ten minutes in bed. I can't go for a walk/run/gym those days as I have the kids to get ready for school.

Maximum sleep does me much more good than 10 min drinking coffee.

IsawwhatIsaw · 24/09/2024 21:00

I get up in time for a leisurely few cups of tea. Then after work I’ll have a 30- 40 minute walk, maybe bit of online yoga in the evening.

Love that idea

I could weep reading these posts.
I so need out of my job in the next couple of years; self-care in the mornings awaits!

@Givemegoldensun

I'd drown myself in Autumn/Winter!!

@mynameiscalypso

must do!! Throw in a couple of sprints up the stairs & some squats & thats 'exercise' ticked off!

(if you drink it) a nice coffee while you log on!!

Similar here. I get the kids up, sort the washing, get myself dressed, packed lunches. Get them to school. I do try and walk them to school.

I make a point of going to the gym after work quickly before getting DC or a walk at lunch.

I was just coming on to post that I walk my dog on the beach. Sometimes she goes for a swim. I don't because it's too cold.

@MargaritaPracticallyCan

whats your non working morning like?

SarahSosej · 24/09/2024 21:09

I’m a roll out of bed person but taking time to enjoy a morning coffee in the garden does appeal!
