Howwww much for French doors?!?!

AIBU to let out a few salty words when getting a quote for ordinary white uPVC French doors and being told £3,000?! 😱

Is this what they are now (in S Wales)? We were asking around before covid and getting quotes of half that - I suppose it's our own fool fault for not acting then...

I know right!! We were quoted £4.5k for french doors in white uPVC in the SouthWest. It annoys me because about 8 years ago I had some put in my old flat for £950. How on earth did everything get so expensive??

FloydWasACat · 24/09/2024 13:20

We had some fitted last week, around £5000, SE England

Viviennemary · 24/09/2024 13:21

Patio doors seem to be a lot cheaper. But French are nicer.

OrwellianTimes · 24/09/2024 13:44

South Wales, paid £1600 for sliding French doors in January this year. Basic, no frills, but sturdy and run very smoothly

FloydWasACat · 24/09/2024 13:54

Mind you, the gap they had to fill was quite large replacing broken bi-fold doors

Notmyfirsttimeinthismadhouse · 24/09/2024 13:56

I'm currently complaining about kitchen fitter costs on another thread but our upvc French doors were £1800 two years ago and we're in Surrey. Sliding/patio doors were more expensive.

ShaneFulorgy · 24/09/2024 14:13

Why not do it yourself? It really isn't as hard as you think. We were quoted £1900 for a new double glazed front window (it is fairly large though), we went online and found we could buy a new triple glazed window for £1100 and fit it ourselves, so that's what we did. It took us a day and a half but most of that was removing the old window. We just watched some youtube tutorials, bought some glazing tools off of ebay and went for it. It came out brilliantly and we have since gone on to fit 4 other new windows ourselves and a new front door, which was quoted as £2k fitted. We got a new composite glazed front door for £780 and that only took about 5 hours, start to finish.
The company we used is modernupvcwindows.co.uk They were really helpful with how to measure properly and gave us masses of advice on how to do this ourselves.
Next year we will be doing our french doors and kitchen window and then that is our house done. If you want any advice on having a go, feel free to message me and i'll help where I can 😊

Rainbowshine · 24/09/2024 14:16

@ShaneFulorgy How did you sort out the building regs and FENSA when you did the work yourself please? Interested as we need to replace some bifold doors which will be £££££ to have installed

Oh sweet lord!!! 😱 You know, you watch these property TV programmes, and they say 'It's £5k to build this extension' and you say 'How?! How is it?!' We're just tarting up an existing extension and we've already had to pay £2k to insulate and put verges on the roof, then we'll need screed and LVT on the floor... with the doors as well, you wonder if it would have been cheaper to knock the extension down and build a new one...

Crikey... mind you, I know there's a premium in your part of the world...

Though we have found ourselves in a 'naice' area, and I swear they add a 0 to quotes because of this, assuming we are all rolling around in a bath of diamonds...

I hope I'm using the right terminology? We're wanting two that open out like a normal door, but all glassy and with those fake Georgian criss-crosses in (the windows are all like that). Not slidey-acrossy (had a bad experience with some that stopped sliding)...

I was quoted £2k for just a front door, bargain for 2 of them!

We just didn't bother. We have no intention of selling our house, so there was no point. When our kids come to sell the house when we're dead, they can buy an indemnity policy for the installation if they have to.

Compash · 24/09/2024 14:41

@ShaneFulorgy I admire your can-do attitude and am impressed at your skills! Alas, I know we couldn't... we have a divorce just walking into Ikeanam... replacing the doors would result in a double-spousicide...

The search continues...

We have to get a new front door too... 😩 We're waiting to see how they are on our patio doors before we do that though.

Is the quote from a big chain? Our first quote for roofing work was £17k more than the other three quotes we subsequently got from local firms!!! Needless to say we didn't go with them.

We call the sliding ones patio amd the opening ones s French doors. Not sure if that's the same everywhere. Quote for French doors was a lot dearer.more than double But it was years ago.

MrsMillyFluff · 24/09/2024 14:48

North East England, they cost us £2000 two years ago, but that was with knocking a hole in the wall as it was originally a window.

MrsMillyFluff · 24/09/2024 14:49

Sorry, mine are French doors.

Button28384738 · 24/09/2024 14:58

Our patio door (sliding one rather than French door) was £1k plus fitting! Just a normal white uPVC one

My slidey-across doors are an absolute bugger to slide these days, like one of the rounds in World's Strongest Man.

I'd love French doors but yeah, ££ thousands ...

Double spousicide 😂

Whoo! These say they're a local 'family firm'. They all seem to be family firms. Perhaps the family is The Mafia...

I just KNOW they would go like that... The extension was put on by the last owner's brother, and it settled a bit, which is what's blown the original doors (they're also 20 years old).
