To panic over dd eating this

Talkabtit101 · 24/09/2024 09:23

Posting for traffic really.

DH gave DD some mini scotch eggs this morning, I'd gone into the kitchen to see the wrapper on top of bin, marked USE BY 23 Sept 2024.

DH insists that 8 hour doesn't make much of a difference but because it's meat and egg, I'm in a huge panic over it, he thinks she ate around 2-4 before I noticed, they was ASDA mini savoury eggs.

I tasted one of the eggs myself, and they tasted fine and looked fine.

I do suffer with anxiety, so for those who think this is a joke it is not, it's a genuine worry over my child, it's meat and eggs, it's not a chocolate that's gone out, it's not a best by date, it's a use by date.

Thank you to all who answered my questions on if it was anything SERIOUS to be worried about.

No, it’s not a genuine worry. That’s the whole point. It’s your condition messing with you.
People asking if you have anxiety and suggesting you see your GP are not being mean. You having this worry in the first place is a pretty big flag that you probably suffer from anxiety and treating your anxiety induced thoughts like they are genuine will not do you any favours.

Sounds like you are anxious OP

i are some chicken last week 2-3 days past sell by date and it was fine! Smell stuff first

Food isn’t Cinderella. It doesn’t rot as soon as the clock strikes 12. Seriously OP, this is your anxiety and not a genuine concern.

LostTheMarble · 24/09/2024 10:17

My son once ate a couple of those tube yogurts from the fridge before I realised they were about a week out of date. He lived, probably made them probiotic or something…

Peonies12 · 24/09/2024 10:18

You know those dates are a load of rubbish? Especially with something so ultra processed like a scotch egg. I can't believe anyone pays attention to them, I never check them and I've never been sick. I hope you're getting support for your anxiety.

LostTheMarble · 24/09/2024 10:20

PenelopePitStrop · 24/09/2024 09:59

The use by date is important, but 8 hours in the fridge is nothing to worry about. Apart from anything g else, some produce marked 23rd would have been made at 6 am and some at 6pm so there had to be wiggle room!

My worry would be about the high fat, high salt content that helps stop stuff going off, and the processed meat and highly processed nature. All less healthy than 8 hours late on a sell by date. Give her booked or scrambled eggs!

It’s a scotch egg, not cocaine in a salt shaker. The op didn’t ask for a lecture from the Cult of Anti UPF.

Talkabtit101 · 24/09/2024 10:25

Ok thanks everyone who answered, even the funny ones, I do appreciate them, and can see that most are just trying to help.

I do seek support for my anxiety, but today's been a super hard day in my personal life too, so it might've been a bit extreme.

To the comments around " how could you give your child scotch eggs " it'd a scotch egg, I'm not giving her drugs. It's a British savoury that's popular in our household, I buy them, she tried it she liked it, she eats it. I didn't ask for a nutrition diet plan.

Your child will be fine.

Your DH on the other hand would not be if he was married to me and brought something as vomit inducing as scotch eggs into the house.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/09/2024 10:30

No manufacturer would dare to go right up to the line on his use by date.

Growlybear83 · 24/09/2024 10:44

I think you are really being ridiculous to panic over this. I'm the worst person for chucking food away as soon as it gets to its use by date, but even I wouldn't bother about eating mini scotch eggs eight hours after their expiry date if they tasted and smelled ok.

And I can see nothing wrong at all with having scotch eggs for breakfast!

Roseshavethorns · 24/09/2024 11:27

Whilst use by and best before dates are a useful tool you also have to apply common sense.
The manufacturer will have stamped all products made that day with the same use by date whether they were produced at a minute past midnight or a minute to midnight. That is a 24 hour difference.
A manufacturer also has to safeguard themselves from someone eating their product (say produced at a minute past midnight) on the use by date (say at a minute to midnight) and getting ill. They will build in wiggle room in the use by dates to prevent any issues. So they will show an earlier use by date than actually necessary.
For pre-prepared food (where the issue is it going off) use your eyes and nose as well as the dates. If it is a few hours after the use by date, it looks and smells ok make sure you follow any preparation instructions and you will be fine.
Anxiety can be crippling so I do have every sympathy.

SleepToad · 24/09/2024 11:47

I ate a yoghurt dated 23/7/24 last week, so almost 2 months out of date. I have a delicate tummy...and I was fine.

I didn't notice the date until the following day when I got another one for breakfast....that was fine to!! We only had one in and I was hungary

TheShellBeach · 24/09/2024 12:06

OP we love Scotch eggs in our house, too.

And (gasp) Spam.

Bring it on!

Talkabtit101 · 24/09/2024 12:08

@TheShellBeach

Yes! Spam!!

I know they have salt in, and they're not necessarily made for children, but she tried them one day I was eating them and loved them... but you'd think I was giving her a Matilda chocolate cake for breakfast. When that's actually tomorrow's breakfast.

Hi op. I worry a lot about meat as well so I can understand your concern. However in this case I really do think that you've got nothing to be concerned about as: fridge, only 8h and also I assume that mini scotch eggs are so processed that they are leas likely to go off quickly anyway.

Also keep in mind even if rhey have started going off your dd is unlikely to become seriously unwell (if she is otherwise healthy) or might just have a bit of an upset stomach.

nOasistickets · 24/09/2024 12:12

No she will be fine. You do need to see someone anxiety tho - as she grows up, you being like that will absolute be good for me, trust me - I have anxiety.

It’s a scotch egg, not cocaine in a salt shaker. The op didn’t ask for a lecture from the Cult of Anti UPF.

And the OP is free to make her own decision, obviously. It wasn’t a lecture, I simply said what it is within the OP that I would have concerns about. And obviously based on frequency and amount. Based on NHS advice, not any cult.

The OP was ‘panicking’ about 8 hours past date, but has no concerns about the food itself. Fine. My take would be different.

Your opinion on the food produce was not asked for, much like if you were vegan the op wouldn’t have cared on your opinion or links to why the meat trade is immoral. No one looks at a scotch egg and confuses it for one of the mythical MN Massive Salad, anyone eating one knows it’s in moderation. They’ve always been around and no doctor would with a serious face say ‘scotch eggs are killing you’…

Soubriquet · 24/09/2024 12:27

If it smells alright, looks alright and feels alright, I never listen to use by dates

Like a PP said it’s not a magic date that causes food to suddenly cause you become ill. Sometimes food goes off before the date!

Talkabtit101 · 24/09/2024 12:37

@PenelopePitStrop

I would be more eager to learn if she was only eating scotch eggs for breakfast lunch and dinner, she doesn't.

In fact... where did I mention it was her breakfast, I didn't because it wasn't. She was still hungry after her usual breakfast, so she was given a few scotch eggs, and she enjoys them.

I don't care about the food I'm enquiring about because it is a scotch egg. They have been around for centuries, and in my opinion still better that most the shit that's made and labelled as " kid snacks "

As I've been told by professionals. - everything in moderation is fine.

Ha very good! Grin YABU to even mention the word spam... but regarding the scotch eggs (or anything else), I always use my nose, use my eyes, use my common sense... then look at the use by date. You'll be fine - although I am slightly miffed as I want scotch eggs now and it's too late to change my Asda order... HmmGrin

MovingTooFast121 · 24/09/2024 12:40

I have a vague memory of a TV show year ago where there was a bloke eating meat which was weeks outside of its use by date. I have no recollection of what exactly this was but I think the premise was as some kind of experiment. Anyway, he didn’t die.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 24/09/2024 12:47

If it helps OP, I used to make various supermarket own brand food. We had to make sure everything was safe till the use by + 2 days to allow for people putting it in a hot car / going to 6 other shops on the way home / leaving out of the fridge all day as a picnic etc.

As PP said - if those eggs were made at 1am they'd have the same UB date as ones made at 11.30pm on the same day. The whole 24 hours will have the same date. 8 hours is neither here nor there.
