To have given my neighbour short shrift on the phone after I allowed access under false pretences

Neighbour is almost at the end of a first storey extension.
i never opposed any of the plans and as she was extending to the end of her garden I figured that it would give my small garden a litttle bit more privacy. I can see having reviewed the plans her builder has built out 1400 more than was on the plans.

she messaged me to ask if her builder could come into my garden as he needed to make a small hole - there are three brick vents n the new bit so I summised he must’ve been adding to it.

my DD text me at mid day to let me know we had a window facing directly into my garden - I check on my CCTV and she was right.

i phoned the neighbour aghast and asked her what the hell she was playing at and that the window was definitely not on the PP application-her response
‘we needed more light’ 😩

I told her under no uncertain terms that her builder was to vacate my property and to stop work

AIBU to ask them to brick up the window and return it back to how it was - I’m tempted to call the planning enforcement officer so they can see all the other gaffs they’ve made but panicking that she might get asked to tear it all down - which although I’m really cross about I’d not want that to happen.

Tall tree strong enough for big wind chimes.....

rainbowstardrops · 25/09/2024 09:20

I'm not a builder or window fitter but that window looks shocking!!!! Looks like she's employed a bunch of cowboys!

KnottedTwine · 25/09/2024 09:24

I just thought - if the builder needs access to your garden again get lots of guarantees about compensation if they cause any damage and that the finish will be high quailty

No, just refuse access.

Packetofcrispsplease · 25/09/2024 09:24

Agree with everyone so far who says this isn’t permitted and you need to inform planning dept .
sounds like she’s gone beyond with her building an extension anyway .
especially if she’s built to almost the end of her garden ?

AperolWhore · 25/09/2024 09:28

TooManywines · 25/09/2024 08:33

Any suggestions of what we can do/add in front of that window - on a low budget gratefully received

I would either erect some trellis to block the window or get a huge planter and pop some laurels in it, they grow up to 6ft in a year!

Please read the OP's posts: she has reported this to planning at the council

Flagpole? Lots of them around here. Some have a top bar thing so rhe flag is always nicely displayed even when there's no wind.

One house near us has a flag for every occasion- pancake day, remembrance, St George, pirate day etc. I think their kids make them.

Guzista · 25/09/2024 09:52

How big is the window. If it's more than 1.0m x 1.0m it breaches building regs too and will need to go.

Fraaahnces · 25/09/2024 09:55

A teenager, a ladder and a can of black spray paint?

Greydogs123 · 25/09/2024 09:56

A pot of bamboo will grow quite high. It might work as a temp measure to prevent nosiness.

antigome · 25/09/2024 10:01

Just make sure any bamboo planted is within a container as the roots are super destructive, virulent and could end up costing you £££ to remove and repair damage

triballeader · 25/09/2024 10:02

Not bamboo…that can be a problem if the OP ever wants to sell.
How about pyracantha.
Looks lovely from your side, brings in birds but it’s a nightmare of dark impenetrable thorns of the other. I have some that’s made it’s way up my bay windows and I am still trying to work out how to cut it back to let the light back in.

HighPrecisionGhosts · 25/09/2024 10:04

A bin liner over the windows area.
Stick your BBQ under/logburner/your newly built pizza oven.
Or your compost bin
Or your garden rubbish bin burner
Trellis.
Tree. A lovely holly tree
Bird feeders
Basketball frame
Your washing line and hang up dark. sheets all the time

Bantai · 25/09/2024 10:09

Huge window.
Such CF's.
Wait and see what happens with your reporting.
What a shit job.
Everything would be happening under that window. A bunch of plastic plants that need constant watering.

muggletops · 25/09/2024 10:12

A wind chime on a long pole strapped to your fence/wall just high enough to be outside their window? A bright security light angled so that its beaming through the window.

My neighbour did this and the planning officer visited, said ooh thats not on and did nothing! My husband put up a six foot fence just inside our boundary and neighbour complained we'd spoiled her view of our garden.

neighbour complained we'd spoiled her view of our garden.”

There is no limit to some people’s cheek & sense of entitlement. 🤦‍♀️

Alltheyearround · 23/09/2024 20:24

I agree. Maybe some pigs and chickens as well, and a man chicken (can't remember how to spell cockeral?)

A big noisy man chicken that likes shouting his head off at 6am.

Man chicken 🤣

msbevvy · 25/09/2024 10:21

Maybe she would like one of these staring through her window.

Hire some paintball equipment and have a paintball party in your garden.

SUCH a shame so many hit that window inadvertently.

And NO they cannot access your garden to clean it off.

Sorry I wasn't clear - I meant to remove/brick up the window

Definitly refuse access for any others works!

pointedlypointless · 25/09/2024 10:32

I don’t recommend …. But a friend has a neighbor who looks out his window into neighbors yard. Literally, face in the window watching what they are doing. The neighbor house, v old, it’s a tiny window and when you know layout (thank you Rightmove), it’s clear it’s deliberate because window guy nosy & noise complainer (any noise). He must be on a stepladder to get into that small window.

Anyway, overlooked guy built a fence to normal 2 meters, then made a fence panel on a pole with ropes he uses to pivot the panel to block view/hide neighbor face of where he is in the garden. The panel is above the 2 meter fence, so it’s 3-4 meters up. . It’s quite cute, doesn’t block his window but covers his crazy face so can’t see him. The pivot part doesn’t go over the boundary.

If family at patio, pivot to left. If family at bottom of garden (chasing sun), pivot to right.
I believe it has stopped him looking out because he knows can’t be seen.

I would include a photo … but wouldn’t want the out anyone and cause trouble.

As a retired construction professional this appears wrong in so many ways, but further info is needed to decide the best recourse. Is the newbuild or the foundations on the boundary line, if so the Party Wall Act applies and presents enforceable responsibilities. Is it Permitted Development, if so the Planning Authority will not be so interested. You could use a surveyor to resolve this and charge the cost to them.

Sprinkle some bird food on the window ledge on a regular basis

How high is it from the ground? Could just lean a fence panel against it? I bet you could get an old manky one on freecycle.
Or a poster of someone looking in. Or a poster of their building plans with the lack of window highlighted? make sure you back it with card or something so no light gets through.

longapple · 25/09/2024 10:51

https://www.amazon.co.uk/rabbitgoo-Blackout-Privacy-Blocking-Protection/dp/B0CKMRMJYR/ something like that? just sticks with water so wouldn't even be damaging their window. No idea how well it would stay on in rain though, bit of tape top and bottom would make it stay with horrible looking bubbles and streaks.
