Periods not started age 15 - normal?

TerribleGardener · 23/09/2024 14:00

Prompted by a thread about erratic teenage periods, my daughter is 15 and has not yet had a period. NHS website says that they will usually start by age 17 but see GP if not started by age 15. GP (by phone) advised to bring her in if nothing happened in next 6mnths. All other signs of puberty are there. Am I being unreasonable to be worried that there maybe an underlying health condition? Anyone have any experience of periods starting age 15+ with there being no underlying cause/condition?

I was 15 and a few months when mine started. I don't think it's anything to worry about quite yet.

LonelyLisa · 23/09/2024 21:05

DD (14) has not started yet. It's due to low weight and an eating disorder (her weight is at the bottom of the healthy range and not below). How tall/heavy is DD? could be that esp as you say she is skinny.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 23/09/2024 21:11

I too was late, OP. 16.

I’m 52 now and waiting patiently for my periods to stop but they show up, regular as clockwork.
I grew until 21.

Christwosheds · 23/09/2024 21:22

I was 16. I didn’t start until my weight hit seven stone ish.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/09/2024 21:38

My dd needed to be over 8.5 stone before her periods started and they stopped any time she went under that weight.

My guess is your dd needs to gain a bit of weight.

I was 16. I was of slender build. I had no fertility issues.

Cynic17 · 23/09/2024 21:47

Completely normal. Mine started at 16.5. I never saw a GP about it.

Ladyof2024 · 23/09/2024 22:35

I was 11 and my best friend was 17, which just goes to show what a wide range of ages is normal.

PigeonLady · 23/09/2024 22:42

I started at 16. It took a while to become regular; sometimes had longer cycles and some irregularity.

All healthy pregnancies, no miscarriages, no issues conceiving (literally first month/ cycle trying both times).

Only issue is post partum my periods have become much heavier (3/4 days super heavy) and much longer - 7 days total!! 😭

Alicenwonderland · 23/09/2024 22:44

I was almost 16 and so was my sister. I have 4 children now, she has two. I was very slim so always put it down to that. I was worried about it at the time but my mum wasn't as she'd started late too so we didn't visit a doctor.

Ruffpuff · 23/09/2024 22:48

I know it’s not quite the same, but I started just after I turned 14. I only ever had a few a year though and they were very irregular until age 18/19. I didn’t really start puberty until 13 ish.

I don’t know if it’s worth noting but I was very underweight when I was 14, and I did a lot of running/athletics. I filled out gradually until I hit 18 and then my periods became regular.

Ruffpuff · 23/09/2024 22:50

*oh and just to add- I have no fertility issues that I know of. I fell pregnant at 20 to my son.

dicdicnurse · 23/09/2024 22:55

My DD is nearly 15 and hasn't started. We have had a few queries from HCP about her weight but I was exactly the same, really small and slight and didn't start until I was 15+.

ForeverPombear · 23/09/2024 22:58

My period started age 17 but I was underweight which was probably part of the problem

MumofCrohnie · 23/09/2024 23:00

My DD is 14 1/2, 52kg, 5ft 5, quite curvy, but hasn't started yet. I think it's because her Crohn's disease has only really been under control in the last 4 or 5 months (she was 47kg in Feb/March before they got the inflammation under control). I know she is desperately worried about it.

She has been referred to gynae for primary amenorrhea by her gastro doc, but I am hopeful she will start before we get an appointment.

tiredmumof1x · 23/09/2024 23:08

I was just turned 16 and skinny(size 6) I then had a few years aged 18-20 without periods. For me late and irregular periods turned out to be a sign of Crohn’s disease and low iron but of course I had other symptoms too.

Scenty · 24/09/2024 11:31

Usually you follow your mothers pattern. I was 12, my DD1 was 11, DD2 12. They are both athletic and considerably lighter than I was at that age.

Tests around this can be quite invasive so speak to your GP before you go down this road.

It’s not abnormal to be 15 and not have periods but it would be unusual if your arrived earlier

TerribleGardener · 23/09/2024 14:08

Interesting to see the replies about weight and being athletic, she is on the slight side and plays a lot of sport.

Exactly the same as my DD who started at 15 and a few months. I wouldn't have said she was underweight though, just slim build and she does a lot of sports and training (pretty much daily).

Hye000 · 28/01/2025 09:54

I always thought my DD would be a late bloomer as I was at least 15 when I got my first period. My DD is very petite for her age, low weight & also does a high level of sport… all the being said, she got her period at just turned 13. Took me by surprise! Google says they need to be approx 7 stone, my daughter is over a stone below that and still got her period so weight clearly doesn’t always have that edge.
