Birthday money for class friends - how much?

Hi,

My son has his second class friend's birthday today. I put £20 in a card for the first one and wondering if £10 would suffice this time? He has another to go to in a couple of weeks and it's all starting to add up.

YABU - £10 is too little?
YANBU - £10 is ok for a primary school child!

Thanks!

WTF? 20 quid?!

Edited

Similar to another poster, I was regularly giving £10 but at my son's 11th party over a year ago, everyone gave £20, and the same thing again when another son turned 10, so that seems normal for my area. But we don't have tons of parties per year and they're all nice kids and have strong friendships so I don't mind.

No wonder some kids are so entitled.

Did I say that the children themselves were asking for ££ or even expecting it? No. They were much happier with any old cheap plasticky present to unwrap for the novelty factor. Must be miserable being so bitter..

I always put £10 in

Plusplus2 · 24/09/2024 09:50

£5 is enough

My dd was invite to a 6th birthday party from school which we accepted and I even mentioned the nut allergies on the rsvp. We then had to candle super last minute Saturday morning ( when the party was at 4pm) due to lack of sleep with a 7week old baby. My question is, is it appropriate to take the already bought toy into class on Monday for the child whose party we was due to attend? Thanks

I think for 10 year old, anywhere from £30 - £60 would be appropriate.

What? Don't be ridiculous.

Merrymess · 24/11/2024 16:18

A fiver is fine, No need to show off and give 20.

Figgygal · 24/11/2024 16:19

I used to do gifts until 8/9 now I give £10 so they can get something they want/like and to avoid duplicates

Usedtobeslummy · 24/11/2024 16:30

I prefer to buy a gift but if I give money I've done a fiver and a packet of sweets. Im in the South East.

Giving money is soulless. There are so many other gift options and they would work out cheaper than the money put in a card.

Merrymess · 24/11/2024 16:53

Kids love getting money. I don't think it's souless. Mine loved being able to go and choose something to buy with their birthday money.
