To ask for discounts at charity shops

We have loads of really nice charity shops round where I live, and I shop there regularly.

However, there are a couple of shops that (IMO) massively overprice garments.

I picked up an unbranded top yesterday with a couple of loose threads at the bottom - took it to the till, and it was £9.50.

I paid it this time, but sometimes I have asked for discounts on the grounds of damage or things just not being sensibly priced.

Genuinely curious: is it better to ask for a discount sometimes, or to not buy the garment at all? Thanks in advance for opinions!

YABU: If you don't want to pay the price on the tag, leave it
YANBU: No harm in asking for a discount

One of our local ones rarely has anything priced over £8, unless it’s new with tags on or something high end.
Ive picked up so many bargains from there and it always seems busy especially when they have just restocked.
I think it depends on the shop, we’re so lucky to have the one we do close by, all the clothes are in great condition and so cheap.

I think it vastly depends on if you are using a charity shop because you can't afford elsewhere or you want to support the charity.

Yeah, waiting is something I'm more than happy to do if the garment is nice - if it goes, great; if it doesn't, great for me.

I was just wondering because I rarely ask for discounts but was in a few yday that I think are really greedy - £4 for a plastic bangle, £4 for a Morrisons baby top, nearly £10 for a secondhand women's top without labels.

It's cases like those where I'm thinking, is it better to just leave it and stop shopping there?

I agree. Recently I've seen some items really overpriced at charity shops. I just get equivalent stuff from Temu now as feel charity shops taking the mick with some of the prices.

I think charity shops are sometimes quite expensive, seen things that are an extra £5 to buy brand new and would rather pay the extra £5

I wouldn't be brazen enough to ask for a reduction, BUT sometimes I do point out that something (that I'd quite like to buy but feel that they've overpriced because of the obvious and to some, unsaleable, flaw) has an obvious stain on the front/big moth hole/etc and sometimes they do whack off a bit. Occasionally this backfires and they sniffily take it off the shop floor as unsaleable. Grin

I do actually think that for things like actual holes, unless the tag is marked 'sold as seen' it's perfectly ok to point out the hole. I certainly wouldn't ask for money off something if I just thought it was overpriced but there was no flaw - if that's what they're selling it as, then that's that. Significant damage like bad stains or holes is another matter IMO.
